As for me, because most of my speedpaints were timely set in 30mins, I always start in blocks/shapes to form the character I want or a landscape. then I quickly add details to it. Sometimes if you have a reference, it will help you visualize what you will use and brush.

ok, do you need like photoshop for doing these or will just SAI do?
I just love the look of speedpaints cos' they contain so much detail though the images are done so fast... o.o
I'm gonna do speedpaints in the future and I hope i won't like over do the details in one picture and run out of time..
