Out of curiosity, what prompted you to depict Azathoth this way? Β Don't get me wrong, you did a fantastic job, and it's a very evocative depiction of the Daemon Sultan, but...well, hm. Β I've noticed that a lot of artists depict Azathoth in a similar fashion, drawing It as a star-like nexus of tentacles/rays/what have you, but as far as I know there aren't any passages in any of Lovecraft's writings that explicitly describe It as such; it's just described rather vaguely as being the ultimate center and locus of all realities, the singularity to Yog-Sothoth's infinity. Good question. I can only really speak for myself in the creation of this here picture, but I'll try and explain some of my thinking in making this. I guess, being a nexus of all realities, to me suggests that an outward radial design would be quite fitting. Despite it being said he is blind, I drew an eye but wanted it to look weird(working with blind people I think an eye doesn't necessarily mean sight even if it looks normal). The teeth are to represent that he is said to gnaw hungrily. The tentacles are to create that outward radial, sun likeI guess, pretty much because most other Lovecraftian inspired art involves tentacles...and they are fun to draw.Β
Hope that goes some way to answer your question. I may have just been blabbering hehe.

Thank you. I am indeed a fellow fan the imagery from his stories and mythos in general has been a big influence on my recent arty farty endeavours.Β

I quite like Dream Quest of Unknown Kadath, most of the stories with Randolph Carter in the dream world in fact. How about you?Β

haven't gotten to Dream Quest yet, moving it farther ahead on my "to read" list.

i like the idea behind Celephais because of the dream world,

and thenΒ the story of Arthur Jermyn, Rats in the Walls and Color Out of Space.Β

Oh hai, been awhile. Just thought I'd say, started reading work from August Derleth who carried on the Cthulhu mythos after Lovecraft. Read The trail of Cthulhu and I've started The Mask of Cthulhu. I enjoyed Trail so just thought I'd share that, maybe add to your "to read" list hehe

Derleth writes in a very similar style to Lovecraft, wanted to keep the style going I believe. Tis not too shabby.

fantastic, Lovecraft was one of my favorite 20th century writers.Β

any short stories by Derleth that you would recommend first?

Hullo! Just finished The Mask of Cthulhu and Trail of Cthulhu, the latter being the stronger I believe. The stories in Trail all converge in the end whereas with Mask the stories are only very vaguely linked together and seem a little random. But, there is a fair bit of repetition in Trail as I think the stories were all written for a monthly magazine so needed a recap during each story. But, nonetheless, I enjoyed both as a pleasant read on my daily commute so would probably recommend both Β
