Fascinating. It's like a half way point between cel shading and photo realism. I love it!Β Β It makes the pup look so vibrant and alive like he's going to bound off after a few wags of his tail (he has that 'you coming?' look about him). I love how you used the blue. Makes him look more black if you know what I man. How did you do this?

Thanks for the kind words! I did it all in Photoshop with a Wacom 13HD tablet. My clients provide a photo of their pet and then I create a cartoon that's pretty close to the original photo. It's all layering... Top layer is the eye/nose shine and whiskers, then the black outline, then there's a layer for the base color, one for shadows, one for the lighter base color, and one for highlights. I'm probably missing a layer or two in there, but you get the idea.

Cool. I might try and draw my own dog like this... My speciality is cel shading but it does make animals look rather plain and plastic. Your method stays true to cel shading but actually makes them look like they have fur! I have so much on my plate right now though it will be ages before I get to try and draw my beloved Rex.
Thanks for the explanation.Β
