After Anthony lost his race from Speed Racer's (or Go Mifune) Mach 5 with his Formul8r, he probably looking around to figure out what to do to pick the right cars to over-qualify Speed. That is until he found one old vehicle from Speed's family, its Mach 4.

So, he took it without a notice, customizing it the car and calling his vehicle "Mach 97". During the qualification, when Anthony drives his customized Mach 4, Speed was shocked and didn't believe how Anthony got away with his old vehicle from his family's team. Which he'll probably not only beat Anthony, but also call the official for the "Spygate".
