Lizzies-Uke In reply to ??? [2013-06-24 23:03:43 +0000 UTC]
I pulled up the alphabet and was drawing this out for myself as I reached the point where it says, "Bow ties are cool", but I still can't figure out where the single letter 'C' is in there... Help?

Well Gallifreyan doesn't use C's unless absolutely necessary, so it's a K instead.

This is absolutely amazing, thank you so much for making this! What program do you use to draw the gallifreyan digitally?

I use flash, but inkscape is a good free alternative.

How do I use the translator? What program do I open it with? I can't figure out how to use the file.

Question: I downloaded the generator on my mac and when i put in my name a tiny skinny white rectangle appears in front of whatever I've typed. If i delete and retype enough the white rectangle disappers, however then whatever I've typed comes out differently than what it had when the white box was there. My question is which version should I trust, the one with the white rectangle or the one without it?

Hello good sir. What I don't understand is the extended lines and the arcs on the outer circle that were shown in the slide that said "Bow ties are cool." at the bottom. An explanation would be much appreciated. Thank you.

BlackHatGuy In reply to hiyayah [2013-05-26 17:53:19 +0000 UTC]
Well there's a more thorough explanation here: [link]
But basically, the lines can start and end anywhere you want, all that matters is how many lines are coming off of a letter. And the arcs on the outer circle don't mean anything, they're just artistic.

Thank you very much for the explanation.

So the extra small circle on one of the arcs on the outer circle is artistic preference as well?

BlackHatGuy In reply to thegissilent [2013-06-05 22:34:58 +0000 UTC]
Nope, that's a period.

stegsteg In reply to ??? [2013-05-22 19:19:11 +0000 UTC]
You mention that while the letters r, w and t are used to connect words, they dont follow the rule that you dont attach vowels to them. That is, at least, how your downloadable translator works.
π: 0 β©: 1
BlackHatGuy In reply to stegsteg [2013-05-25 03:46:00 +0000 UTC]
Yes, very astute observation! However, the vowel attaching thing isn't a rule. I just programmed the translator that way to make word connection easier.
π: 0 β©: 1
stegsteg In reply to BlackHatGuy [2013-05-26 17:32:10 +0000 UTC]
So if you werent to use the program you can still attach vowels to r, t, and w then?
Thanks

My friend has asked me this, but if you can translate Gallifreyan, then why has no one translated the Doctor's name?
π: 0 β©: 2
BlackHatGuy In reply to theawesomeone4242564 [2013-05-19 13:37:30 +0000 UTC]
Simple. On the show, Gallifreyan is written as a bunch of random circles that don't mean anything. This is a fan-made version of Gallifreyan.

This is so cool I based my own fictional alphabet off it, used by an ancient tribe. Here's what I've got so far: letters are composed of octagons with various lines inside them. Words are formed by overlapping letter octagons. The lines from the vowel of one word extend to the octagon of the next word in the sentence.
Here's what I'm having trouble with (think you can help out?): how to write words with multiple occurrences of the same letter or multiple vowels, how to tell anagrams apart, and which direction sentences are written in (this would probably be based on which direction the vowel line extends, but there are a few lines to choose from).

BlackHatGuy In reply to evfan13 [2013-05-19 13:53:06 +0000 UTC]
Whoa, cool! Maybe you could add a certain number of dots on each lineβfirst letter has no dots, then one dot, then two dots, and so on. It would help if you sent me an alphabet sheet or a sample translation or something.

Again, your work is amazing !!! Congrats !!!

Beautiphunk In reply to ??? [2013-05-08 17:36:10 +0000 UTC]
Question. If it is based on the sounds the letters make, would "ph" be changed to "f" if it made that sound? And in words with silent letters, such as "lamb" or "knife", would the letter that is silent be included? Am I making this way more difficult than it needs to be?
π: 0 β©: 2
BlackHatGuy In reply to Beautiphunk [2013-05-09 00:52:04 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, the only time you need to worry about how something sounds is when deciding what to use instead of C.
