Description
Proportion for Flare [link]Flare is rendered from a lower camera angle/focal length. The rest is all perspective - in every sense of the word.
I tried hosting this on Imageshack but prudish morons keep deleting it as a TOS violation for 'nudity'.
...yet strangely this one doesnt get deleted: [link]
is it because shes white? seems like discrimination
On a side note, its distressing that in our society an image like this is considered unacceptable, yet images of extreme violence are perfectly OK. You can find evidence of this on IMDB, for example: where people will leave comments on movies like Rambo IV (or insert any other fantastically violent movie like SAW, Hostel, etc) asking 'I want to take my 12 year old son to see this -- is there any nudity?'. err, yeah... because its OK for your son to see hundreds of people cut to pieces with a .50 cal machinegun, but *god forbid* your son see a bared female breast -- It might warp his mind.
WTF is happening to our society?
cheers,
-Gabriel

Awesome, but her torso is kind of long, and her spine would be broken. You lengthened it so that she could wear heels, which threw it all off. Her groin should be where her hips are, and her ankles at the eight head mark. Added to that, if she was a fighter, she probably wouldn't be fighting in stiletto heels any way. Bodies cannot bend in the way you have, even as a contortionist, they can't. The proportions used are pretty- but very wrong. Her breasts are kind of off as well.
I do agree with you as well about the issues with nudity and violence. It's a shame when love of any form is demonized, while war and greed are used as pinnacles of morality. (This is a longer comment than the one I left on your other deviation 'Flare' because I mistakenly thought it was done by a different person, so for that I do apologize.)

*sigh*
this is my last post on the proportions, and im going to address all of the nitpicking by armchair anatomists:
-'back is broken' etc etc. you are not looking at her back curvature, you are looking at her flexed latissimus dorsi. her spine is actually relatively straight in this image. look at the curve of the *front* of her torso. the back curve is due to camera angle, ample buttocks, and flexed lats.
-her breasts are too high: 1. shes wearing a PUSHUP bra. 2. in the words of Bob Seger, theyre 'way up firm and high'. thats how i like them. i am not a fan of large saggy boobs. a quick google image search can yield you thousands of images of women with high breasts. the media constantly bombards us with images of women with large breasts, and simple physics dictates that the larger they are the lower they are. youre looking at a fit woman with small breasts shoved up even higher in a pushup bra.
-her torso is too long: again, how i like them (and the fact that her breasts are being pushed up higher emphasizes it in this particular image). i find long torsos aesthetically appealing. many others do, but apparently some that dont feel the need to leave comments about their preferences implying that there is somehow an 'error' if the torso isnt the length that they prefer. there are ~3.5 billion women on the planet: some have long torsos, some short. there are far too many comments on both 2D and 3D works such as 'great image, but her breasts should be bigger'. or 'great character but her calves are too muscular'. welcome to style and personal preference. if someone wants to point out a legitimate technical issue with something like musculature, lighting, whatever - then by all means, and if its something i missed or agree that can be improved then ill correct it immediately. but 'her legs are not as long as id like them to be' or 'i think her boobs dont sag enough' does not qualify.
-her left leg is longer than/her right breast is smaller than/her left shoulder is higher than/etc etc: this is not a freehand sketch but a totally symmetrical 3D model. every appendage is the *exact* same length as the other. any *appearance* of one appendage being longer than the other is 100% due to perspective due to camera angle and lens focal length, which leads us to...
-her legs are too short: as shown above proportion is well within averages, and the legs appear shorter in the Flare image due to camera angle and lens focal length. incidentally, there have been studies done where photographs of women were digitally altered to lengthen the legs by as much as 20% and then shown to people to choose which they found correct/attractive: the majority of viewers chose the (completely anatomically incorrect) artificially elongated legs as their preference. i prefer realistically proportioned women to the 'leggy supermodel' look that were spoonfed by the media on a daily basis.
-*gasp* how impractical/offensive, a woman in lingerie with a katana: relax kids, its a PINUP. i also happen to be a character creator, and its hard to show your work in monk robes. besides, who says shes *fighting* anyone in heels? perhaps she was slicing bread for a sandwich? perhaps shes handing her man his sword? perhaps shes demonstrating Kenjutsu to someone? who cares?

First off, I'm going to say that your response was that of a childish, "But I wanna do it like this~!" As though I just took away your toy. Instead of responding with the respect that I gave you, yours was rather stupid. Also, blind.
If you consider that a straight spine, then you have never seen a real life model show one. She is twisting around in a pose that is unnatural as it is, I have a biology book right next to me. If you placed a skeleton over this, showing exactly where you think it's straight, then I might accept that as an answer, until then, no. Just, no.
Next. She's naked. I do not see a fucking push up bra, so do not begin to think that it's something obvious. As I said, her breasts seemed off, I didn't go into detail on it. So stop whining as though I attacked you and your tastes. If you show me what looks like a naked woman, guess what I'm going to treat it as? A naked fucking woman.
Again. I don't care. I was just pointing out that it was long and off. You can like something all you want, that does not mean that it is correct. It is an error in correct anatomy. Done. You are reacting as though this is a personal attack against you, when it is not. Grow the fuck up.
I said nothing about her appendages. And even if I did, they -do- appear off. It is because you've twisted her in an unnatural position! Because bodies cannot stand like that without agony following, and a trip to the hospital.
No. They appear shorter because you put her in heels and then used that as the height. That, along with the perspective that you keep touting. Again, I'm going by a collage anatomy book, not by the media.
Do not pretend to call me, or anyone else, a child when you cannot take a few blows to an art that you created. You made it, deal with a few negative views on it. Chill out, buck up, I'm just doing this for the spank material! Yeah, I spank too, I like pin ups, but you can make a pin up while still being anatomically correct. I'm sorry if that's too much to ask for, or whatever you seem to think.
And you're a misogynistic twat. What kind of examples are those for a reason to have a sword? Wow. Because the first thought that a woman holding a sword shouldn't be that she might fight with it, no! She must be cooking, (which, what the fuckery are you on?) or giving it to someone, or teaching.
I fucking care. And you fucking pissed me off, if you didn't already notice. Because your response was to whine and cry and throw a tantrum over something that was quite small in the realms of what might be a critique or two. It must be -so- hard to get some negative comments. Well, -gasp- relax, kiddo, or get used to it.

i totaly agree, as if the natural nude form is worse than the image (movie magic or real) of people getting killed.

Very nice proportions! She's awesome.
Besides, I'm really glad to live in Europe everytime I hear about american hypocritical prudity, it's kinda ridiculous.
Anyway, keep up the good work!

You make a great point that is very puzzling. However it sounds like deviant art is more of a corporate thing now. True art is whatever the creator deems as art. Perhaps they should post a "18+" security flag on images that may contain "unsuitable" art, whether graphical or typographical.
This is my first hearing of Silo. I may have to try this software. Where do you suggest to find models of Veronica 4?

no no... it was imageshack that deleted the image as inappropriate. i didnt want to host this in my gallery just to show proportion.
problem solved though - i threw it into scraps.
you can get a free demo of Silo at nevercenter.org. V4 used to be a free download from Daz. i suggest if you are starting out with Silo, however, model something small to begin with -- perhaps a screwdriver or a toaster or something. once you learn the fundamentals of sub-d modeling you can apply those same techniques on more complex models. the mistake many people make is starting with too elaborate objects, and they get bogged down with a complex surface and get frustrated. start basic and move up from there - there are plenty of Silo tutorials on the web, and just about any box modeling tutorial can be adapted to silo once you learn the basic commands.
if you want to get into figure modeling the Joan D'arc tutorial over at 3D Total is the best place to start, whatever program you use.
Silo is an excellent modeling toolset but its geared purely towards modeling and lacks any fluff (well, it also has a sculpting mode giving zbrush-like functionality, and a decent UV mapping toolset). there is no renderer, it lacks some things like deformers (for example the Katana in my Flare image was modeled straight, then simply bent in one simple operation in Max. in Silo, this is not possible and its much more difficult to model a curved Katana than a straight one). if you are looking for more, then try Blender. its a free app that can do anything the >$4000 commercial 3D apps can do and it runs on Linux, Windows and Mac. i do about 90% of my modeling in Silo - because its the fastest and slickest sub-d workflow out there IMHO - but i do the remaining 10% in Max or another app, like Blender. if i didnt, it would take me much longer. of course the inverse is also true
cheers,
-Gabriel

Thanks for the detailed explanation. I started on Maya then got into Max. After the Silo demo on their site, I concur that the sub-d looks killer. I'll have to give it a shot. You kind of threw me off with the fact that you had to export the sword to 3DS Max just to bend. I figured Max would be the answer to modeling/skinning the entire model. Too bad Max isn't available for Macintosh.
Does Silo support 3D Text? Still looking for something as simple as Xara for Mac. Maybe I need to go back to Maya. Nonetheless, your art is awesome.

I agree completely with your opinion about people accepting violence and not nudity - actually I'm usually the one to voice it. Hypocritical society, we were born naked.
Also, this is a very lovely body shape!
