Description
When the Caugax army cadets were officialized by the Caugax council there was a mad scramble to supply the cadets with military equipment. But because most of the modern stuff had to go to the National guard and the urban militias the cadets had the leftover from the Martinez weapon stash. These leftovers were mostly guns from world war 2 and in some cases even older like the krag rifles issued to the cadets of the José Gautier Benítez High school. The main rifle of the cadets was desired to be the 1917 Enfield and Patten 14 rifles. This rifle was picked due to the fact that the p14 was used by the britsh in fair numbers. But the numbers of teens that join the cadets had led to shortages of the 1917 /p14 Enfield so a substituted rifle was need. this was solved when 107,2629 Remington produced Springfield M1903A3s were found in Don Bento`s factory. These rifles were modified to take .303 British after a parts and plans of the original Remington .303 M1903 hybrid was found in the factory example archive. These rifle were modified to mimic the lee Enfield MK3 as much as they could. These conversation were called "La modefication Enfield" the Enfield mod witch were done to other rifles like the Mosin Nagant and the araska type 30. This Mod was simply rechambering the rifle to use .303 British and replacing the original sight with a copy of the Lee Enfield mk 3 front rear sight. It could be modified to use the 1907 pattern bayonet like shown here on both rifles with the bayonet adaptor mk 2 witch was quickly replace by the bayonet adapter mk3. When issued the rifles were gained a mixed reaction some found them great as many of the cadets used the rifles in videos games while others were complaining that they were giving heavy antique instead of the more modern ar-15 used by the national guard. In battle the rifles proved to be very successful against the British in terms of accuracy out shooting the Lee Enfield mk3 in some cases. Later on in the war the rifles were replaced by the semi automatic FC-21 rifle. But a good chunk of these rifle were modified to be used as sniper rifles and training rifles in the cadets. In the post war years they were sold quite cheaply in Caugax and many excadets would buy them as hunting rifles or for keepsakes of there time in the cadets.Name: M1917/21 Enfield
Caliber: .303 British
Info: About 101,1521 M1917/p14 rifles found in the factory and were reconditioned for use as reserve, training and Lend-Lease weapons. These rifles are identified by having refinished metal (sandblasted and Parkerized) and sometimes replacement wood (often birch or roble). These rifles were the first rifles to be modified in the Enfield mod program as they were the most like the Lee Enfield in handing. The modifications on the rifles were rechambering the one in 30.06 in to .303 British. The original rear sight element that were protected by sturdy "ears" were removed and replaced by copy of simplified sliding ramp rear sights, fixed-post front sights used by the Ishapore 2A1 rifle, these sights had ranges from 2000 m to 800 m. The front sights were replaced by a unique peace called the bayonet adapter MK2. This pace was based off the MK5 lee Enfield Jungle carbine flash hider/ front sight base and made from two parts. The adapter made not only to take the 1907 pattern bayonet but to minmic the front sight of the MK3 lee Enfield. But the two part MK2 was quickly replaced with the MK3 adapter after completes of the bayonet falling off or the front sight being knocked out of place, the rifle pictured here has the rare MK2 adapter. In service the rifle was called nicked named Eddy due to the production marks on the rifles saying Eddystone arsenal. A small song "Eddy winchester is mi Pana" was written boasting about the rifle is accuracy. The Irish would call this rifle the Eddystone.
Name: Springfield M1903A3
Caliber: .303 British
Info: While the M1917/21 Enfield was to be the main battle rifle for the cadets there was still a shortage of rifles due to the numbers of teens joining the cadets a stopgap weapon was quickly needed. This problem was quickly found when 107,2629 Remington produced Springfield M1903A3 rifles were found in the factory. While the Springfield 1903 rifle was a good rifle, it .30-06 caliber was a handicap in logistics, plans to rechambered the rifle ran into difficulty at first until parts and plans for Remington’s Hybrid .303 M1903 rifle were found in the factory`s archive. These parts and plans were a big help in modifying the rifle and developing what become the Enfield mod. They were two places were this mod was done. Don Bento`s Factory but the rifles were also assembled by sub contracted firms like Caugax ironworks. It took only two mounts for the rifles to be converted the Enfield mod, ergonomic changes were made so the rifles mimicked the SMLE as much it could be done. Don bento`s factory made a number of external and internal changes to approximate the British SMLE. They fitted on the barrel of a P14 on the receiver, the barrel it self had the MK2 adapter. This piece was based off the MK5 lee Enfield Jungle carbine flash hider/ front sight base and made from two parts. The adapter made not only to take the 1907 pattern bayonet but to mimic the front sight of the MK3 lee Enfield. But like in M1917/21 Enfield the two part MK2 was quickly replaced with the MK3 adapter after many complaints of the bayonet falling off or the front sight being knocked out of place, the rifle pictured here has the rare MK2 adapter. Many of these new parts were Parkerized including the barrel, barrel bands, floor plate, front sight assembly, rear sight assembly and the bolt itself. The hybrid also replicates the SMLE rear sight onto the barrel. The style of rear sight had apertures for these sights had ranges from 2000 m to 800 m. They also redesigned the charger guide to support the Lee-Enfield-type chargers rather than the M1903 stripper clips. The bolt was adapted to work with Britain’s rimmed .303 round, with the extractor modified for the British cartridges wider, thicker rim. The rifle did not have the Lee-Enfield’s detatchable box-magazine, instead retaining the M1903’s 5-round internal magazine. The magazine follower on these to have not been altered either. Markings on the rifle are minimal and include a ‘7’ on the front sight post, a ‘B2’ on the bolt handle and a ‘2’ stamped on the magazine follower. No roll marks or serial numbers appear to be present. The faux Lee-Enfield stock with spliced in semi-pistol grip The rifle’s stock has also been adapted, so instead of a straight wristed-stock a piece of wood has been spliced in to create a Lee-Enfield style contour, forming a semi-pistol grip. A contract to make the hybrid rifles at a cost of $100 per rifle was agreed. The rifles were reportedly received in April 10 1921 and following preliminary examination were described as “very successful”. The Irish would called this rifle the Remington.
