Description
This is a tutorial on how I vector ponies in Photoshop. Even if you do it yourself it might serve some useful tips. But I have to say, it was really hard trying to put everything you know down like that. Probably forgot some :/Final image:

They can be pixelated if you are zooming in past 100%, but you can resize it by going edit
RyantheBrony In reply to Blackm3sh [2011-09-18 01:10:33 +0000 UTC]
so when you resize the image what should the dimensions/resolution be? and how do you get to being in an actual vector file and not an exported PNG? (thanks in advance)

Gah, this is really frustrating to me. If I do it in Illustrator there are so many editor drawbacks, I cant even make a gradient in anything other than black or white. But when I switch it to photoshop, it always pixelates the image.
I wish the two would just work together, I like Illustrator's pen tool better but Photoshop has the brush's.

Excellent work!
Out of curiosity though, is there a reason why you use bitmap layers instead of solid colors with blending styles? Also, do you have a preference for the Rubber Band option?

Glad it helped ^^
Though if you are new to this I would recommend using shapes(shown in blue) instead of vector masks. Vector masks is kinda cheating a bit. Still if you got any questions just ask.

TheMageMitch In reply to Blackm3sh [2011-08-13 10:17:02 +0000 UTC]
So are the shapes basically vector masks? To start off i'm going to try to vector Steven Magnet and I could use all the help I could get.

Blackm3sh In reply to TheMageMitch [2011-08-13 14:10:45 +0000 UTC]
Well yes, the only difference is that you have the mask on a fill instead. Like it automatically fills the layer for you with a certain color or gradient. Like if you click the shape option it automatically fills in your path.

Just wondering; what resolution do you usually use for your vectors?
I'm just practicing, and I don't want to mess anything up~

I usually work with a 4000x4000 resolution.

Yes this is intended for people who uses Photoshop. Still I believe it should provide some useful tips regardless of what software you are using. Glad you liked it ^^.

Thanks for the tutorial!
I'm almost done with making my first vector when I was facing a problem: I can't create more than 5 subgroups. You're using six (Rarity>Head>Eyes>Right Eye>Eye>Pupil), I had to change that structure (what really made a mess out of my eye layers...). Do you use CS5? If not and you're also using CS4, are you using a setting I don't know yet?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Blackm3sh In reply to Shikogo [2011-08-05 16:14:05 +0000 UTC]
I'm sorry, I see your problem. I tried opening Photoshop CS3 and wasn't able to exceed this group nesting limit. I guess you just have to upgrade to CS5 where this limit has been removed or organize differently (so yes, I'm using Photoshop CS5). You could try moving the "head" and "body" folder up a level outside the "Rarity" folder to perhaps allow for an additional layer of nested groups? Or instead of having the right and left eye in one common folder you could split them up?
Head>Right Eye>Eye>Pupil <- Only four nested layers/groups
Sometimes you will encounter places where you need to organize differently, so if you become to rigid to one method of doing so it could cost you maybe hours in time. Still that whole limit thing is stupid. Didn't know of it before now...

Shikogo In reply to Blackm3sh [2011-08-05 19:36:22 +0000 UTC]
I just found an way easier way to solve it. I could just remove the "Rarity" (or in my case "Twilight") folder. It contains everything, I don't really need it anyway.
I did it in a different way last time, but if I'll ever make a vector again (and I probably will) I'll do it that way. :3

O_O Wow! My brain was just blown out of the back of my head!! Nothing made sense... But I must say, I haven't the slightest idea how to use any kind of drawing software. Let alone I don't have the steady hand, nor the patience I think I'll leave the creation of amazing art to the people who can understand this >.<
It takes a true professional to make a tutorial as explanitory as this! Excellent job! ^^

Trying reading this [link] or search more on google. I have really no idea, I've always used Photoshop CS 2-5. But after you figure out how to make vector masks or shapes it's really just a question about organizing. Hope you figure it out :/

RockinRabbits [2011-07-28 18:51:54 +0000 UTC]
So... uh... whats the difference between tracing and vectoring?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Blackm3sh In reply to RockinRabbits [2011-07-28 21:19:17 +0000 UTC]
Tracing means following an image which lays underneth it, the method you use is irrelevant. You could just draw ontop if you'd want and it would still be a trace. It also doesn't have to be an image you've found, it could be a sketch you have drawn yourself you are tracing.
Vectoring is just a verb meaning to turn something into vector graphic, or graphic which uses vector. So it vectoring is just another art form alongside drawing and painting. You could call this "a vector trace" if you'd like.

Perfect. While I attempted a vector on my own before this tutorial, it demystifies a lot of the "magic" behind making these. For those that are just getting started with the pen tool, I highly recommend reading some pen tutorials to get the hang of the tool and to be sure to learn the shortcuts, it WILL save time.
