Description This is a tutorial on how I vector ponies in Photoshop. Even if you do it yourself it might serve some useful tips. But I have to say, it was really hard trying to put everything you know down like that. Probably forgot some :/

Very nice! Made me remember how sloppy my method is.

Lol, I can sometimes be sloppy too
But I guess we all find our own way. Hopefully it helped some at least.

yeah, there are actually a couple things I should be doing the way you did. The iris sheen, for instance. Usually I'm lazy and just outline the screencap but it would probably turn out just a little bit nicer if I do them from the center of the pupil like you do.

I've never really heard the word "sheen" much before. I tried googling "iris sheen", your journal were result number 5 . So I'll stick with the high-lights in the eye or something.

Anyway, glad it helped, but some like the high-lights there are more just nitpicks. I guess it was more meant for the ones who are tracing a sketch rather than a screen-cap.

lol it's not a term that refers specifically to eyes, it's just a general term : [link]

I use GIMP. Its amazing how much alike the programs are. Though I would love to try out Photoshop because of the organization that you can get with PS. I can't organize the layers the same way in GIMP. Still, a great tutorial.

Yeah, i read it. Most of it. ^^
And no, clipping masks in Illustrator are basically the same as vector masks in Photoshop. As in, a pain to use, but what can you do?

Then why all the periods?
But sure no problem.

It's a really good tutorial, but the better tools for vector are real vector programs like Inkscape, Illustrator or Coral Draw. My bet is that you can't save your vectors as SVG, so you can't share them on the web as web ready files.

I use Inkscape for all of my vector work, the best part is. It's completely free.

Blackm3sh In reply to doctormo [2011-07-21 18:30:22 +0000 UTC]

I have to disagree. I might be a little better, but not by a very considerable amount since it is drawing we are talking about here. Even with Inkscape and some versions of Illustrator you need to convert you strokes to paths to tapper them properly. So I don't think that going with Inkscape and Illustrator will save you a lot when it comes to drawing ponies. Though they can be very handy for illustrations and other things which requirer high precision.

Oh and I can always export my paths to Illustrator and export it as a SVG there. The reason I use Photoshop is because I'm used to it and I can do more than just vector, like drawing, painting, photo-editing etc. So even if those programs can sometimes be better suited for vectoring, photoshop can do a little bit of everything ^^

Yes, it's true, you can do vector work in Gimp too. But I stick to Inkscape. I was actually thinking about programming a tapering stroke engine into inkscape since I use them so often and have developed coping strategies to perform them correctly.

I wonder if other artists would be interested in the functionality.

I've seen some impressive stuff with Illustrator CS5 allowing you to set points where you want on a stroke to change thickness. Unfortunately I only have CS3
But I think a lot of people would be interested in a tapering engine if it worked well. I believe tapering is a very used technique. ^^

Ah well illustrator has the key difficulty of being proprietary, which may not seem like much to many artists at the moment. But for me, it's a key issue. In any case, with enough demand for a feature, it will surely be done.

It's a nice tutorial, but that looks like ten times as much work as doing the same in Illustrator.

Blackm3sh In reply to Stinkehund [2011-07-21 17:05:43 +0000 UTC]

I don't see how you can do it much faster in Illustrator and not all people have Illustrator anyway.
Personally I don't feel it's that much here.

I could go into more detail here, but actually, i'm planning to do a tutorial myself - just need to find the time. ^^
However, i did upload the unedited video of me tracing a pony - maybe you could watch it and tell me if it looks like more or less work than Photoshop: [link]

Blackm3sh In reply to Stinkehund [2011-07-21 18:16:42 +0000 UTC]

Looks about the same to me. But as I said in my tutorial, it's up to you how much you want to split the image up. I usually make it a little more work by putting the legs on their own layers, the tail on its own layer etc. That way I can move the freely and copy them if needed. I see you mostly take all the outline in one go and that's fine. I also see that her eyes are closed which would make it a lot easier since you didn't have to do the eyes

Really great that you are doing a tutorial in Illustrator though ^^

Stinkehund In reply to Blackm3sh [2011-07-21 18:22:26 +0000 UTC]

actually, the eyes are the easiest part since i can mostly just use the sphere-tool and make a clipping mask for them ^^

Blackm3sh In reply to Stinkehund [2011-07-21 18:33:30 +0000 UTC]

OH GOD, NOT THE CLIPPING MASK! Lol, I guess the clipping mask in Illustrator is a little different than in Photoshop. But yeah I use a group vector mask to constrain it. I'm even saying so in my tutorial
Have you even read it?

LAYERS!
They're everywhere. When you have 217 of them nothing can save you...

They look a lot more managable when you close the folders. You never leave them open like thise beside the one you are working on.
