Description acrylic on canvas, 63x30"

I repainted an earlier painting of mine on a larger scale to fit my show.

There are some questions I am getting asked again and again, maybe my artist statement will help:

Traveling in a car is a daily routine for most people in America today. We are often caught between destinations. Much of our exposure to the surrounding landscape is from within an insulated vehicle. For those who are along for the ride, there is a detachment from the scene that is unique to the passenger side. In order to study this relationship, I have taken moments from this journey and turned them into a destination. These common scenes deserve another look. By photographing scenes as a passenger and reinterpreting them with acrylic paint on canvas, I echo the relationship between artist and viewer. The artist becomes the driver and the viewer becomes the passenger. Although my major inspiration comes from the subject itself, there are certain artists and movements that have influenced my interpretation, including Wayne Thiebaud, Edward Hopper, and the Impressionists, particularly Camille Pissarro. These artists emphasize color and light in the commonplace, and I do the same in my work. Through painting the perspective of a passenger in a car, the role of the viewer as an observer is emphasized, and the beauty of the light and color in the commonplace is revealed.

Like Thiebaud, it's the lighting that does it.

It's beautiful

Wow... your talents haven't faded a bit.
The color and the shadows and the inCREDible implied detail is absolutely STUNNING.

I really like the angle and perspective you got on this WONderful subject.
My only question is:

How did you get a picture of that, or what did you use for referance, or how are you so amazing that you don' tneed a refereance.
...ok, so three questions.

The cityscape and the signs and telephone poles and lights in the background are wonderful additions.
I also love the sky.
I apologize, I have nearly run out of words.

Keep up the amazingly beautiful work!

Thank you!
To answer your question. Yes I do take pictures as references. I simply take them as I'm riding along in the passanger seat (hence the name of the series, "Riding shotgun"). Of course I don't mindlessly copy the photographs. I use them as memory aids and bring out the scene as I felt and experienced it.

Ahhh....
I never thought of the possibility that you were IN a car.

Hah, I apologize. I knew you took pictures. I asked you just about the same question before.
I just wasn't able to but two and two together.

Keep up the fantastically wonderful work!

I like how roads have cracks filled in like in this picture. Looks artistic in itself.
