I've never really understood why he took out that little tuft of hair :/

it symbolized the unraveling of his mind. a man of law, of Order, a man who has always believed that the law = good, faced suddenly with a life or death choice in which the law is OPPOSITE good. that little tuft of hair out of place with the rest of his orderly mane symbolized the way his mind snapped a little out of place as well. and the man couldn't cope.
