I couldn't resist. All those fingers wagging... I think when she saw the camera she just wanted me out. I've never felt guilty buying a sandwich before but I kinda felt unwelcome even though I wasn't holding the camera to my eye. I suspect she knew what I was up to nonetheless.

Not without making a sale first She was pointing at me and saying 'what you want?' I wanted a sandwich. She ignored me after taking my money, but there was a slightly accusatory nature to her question, it seemed at the time. I think I was just lucky to have my finger on the shutter at the right time, with all those digits in use.

No, this is Toronto. That's a reasonable assumption though. These banh mi shops are probably everywhere now, and the people who serve you are universally brusque

Well I was thinking Chinatown as it called here in New York. But yes Toronto has a large Asian population as well.
