Description My interpretation on the social constructs that hide who we really are, especially womens roles in society. This image focuses on the objectivity of women in the Middle East and Africa specifically. I wanted to focus on Islam and its position on women. I find it disgusting that the beauty of women are looked down upon and veiled. So in this shot i tried to uncover this hidden beauty by exposing the sliver of hair and her downward glance signifies her shame. Some people that have viewed this image say that it reminds them of the National Geographic image of the Middle Eastern woman who had no name until it was found nearly 10 years later. I would only hope that my image would be compared to that one, because first it was my goal to capture such an image and second, because i find that image to be one of the most beautiful that i have ever seen. Please excuse the quality of the print because it was scanned (hense the dust marks), so needless to say, the original is much better. (Shot with Pentax 67 medium format, with Pentax 105 mm lens on a Bogen tripod with Kodak T-Max 100 film, printed on Ilford Fiberbased paper and mounted on cardstock) If you would like to buy an original print, in either 8x10 or 11x14 please contact me at Blis102@yahoo.com.

Awesome shot, can't believe you captured that single piece of hair, well done !

though I can't say I share your views, hair covering is a religious choice, but whatever I just like this shot.

First off I would like to say that your picture is very strong and truly captures the beauty of women in Africa, especially since the bold hair and blue eye look is seen as beauty as the overwhelming perception.

But I must correct you on your comment regarding how Islam views women. First off I would like to ask, where did you develop this idea that Islam looks down on the beauty of women and that the veil is seen as a sign of oppression?

As well as you are aware the fastest growing religion these converts also include women.
So I would like to pose you the questions, if Islam is so oppressive to women why are people converting to religion that preaches such discrimination and is it wrong for a woman to preserve her beauty for her close kin and not the rest of society?

I assure you that if you were to ask women if it is were her choice to preserve the veil/hijab, many will tell you yes, just like our sister ~livelikeali.

I am not suggesting that all Muslim treat there women good but nor do Christians, Hindus, Sikhs, Jews, Atheists, etc…but I assure you Islam is not the cause of this oppression.

Your brother in humanity.

Agreed!
Has anyone seen any of the rap videos that objectify women? And when the rapper receives his award he (and she) gets up and thanks God? Now its not just rap but country music, and others too. Bouncy is a millionaire and will not stop dropping it like its hot! Why?
Every movie in America objectifies women!
Our women are shaking there bottoms in strip clubs, making porno, and singing songs about how they degrade themselves for American men!
Take a look at the 100,000 videos of our American women and girls on You-tube doing the most disgusting things!
We even have mature sisters who should be setting and example for the younger generation calling themselves cougars and MILFs! Huh!!
Somehow we think covering the hair is objectifying women? Please oh please get some of these American women to cover up something!

thanks for the shot its really beautiful honestly... but id jus like to add that you saying your focus is on women of islam and how they have to cover i find that very interesting considering im a girl from america raised in america totally americanized my whole family completely americanized... i chose to follow islam myself and willingly decided to cover my body. its not oppression... oppression is when you are forced to do what is against your will, covering my body and choosing not to degrade myself is not oppressive in any way. i was tired of guys checking me out i was tired of getting up everymorning getting dressed to impress random people i didnt know, i cover because i want to be judged by my character my personality not my body... take a look at the virgin mary do u ever see her without a veil on her head? what about the nuns?

I get your point but i think you have wrongly accused islam of doing something it doesnt do... and if random muslims here and there are forcing women to do certain things u cant blame the religion... the people and the religion are totally different, islam is perfect in my eyes but there are many muslims who dont give a crap about god or what hes really saying they change rulings to suit them and their needs or wants...

This really is a very evocative piece. It's jumps out when looking at your gallery which, in and of itself, forms a kind of portrait. You have so many different pieces they paint a portrait of your adventuring with your art. It's very inspiring. It gives "Hidden" even more power.

It is also SO past time to have this over with-- the reasonless, and viscious subjugation of women by unreasoning and vicious little men. And though women in the middle east are in many cases very iconic, religious conservatism here in the states, ancient values in Africa, and Asia are no less ingrained and no less fiendish. To me it is about tearing OURSELVES apart and for...what...or maybe...who...I guess it's still about petty power in the hands of little fools.

Thank you so much for your piece.

Im very glad you took a liking to my work. I agree with what you say, of course, and I think that mere education on the subject, helps change minds. Maybe someday it will change...

Yeah it is unfortunate the way that women are treated in these extreemist states. From what I understand of Islam this way of treating women is counter to the way the actual teachings of the religion. I recently stumbled upon an interesting article that talks about this here [link]

Actualy if you think about it, in the United States, and similar societies, women are mistreated aswell through objectification as sex objects, and there is still that glass ceilling. So it would seem that such societies are not too much better. Just thought I would add my

Good piece though.

Wow. There is so much power and emotion in this shot. It's so simple, yet so strong. It's sad how women are treated in other countries such as the ones you mentioned. Maybe one day salvation will come for them. Beautiful. Definate favourite.
