well i dunno if i should really care much about spoilers since i doubt you wanna keep reading
but whatever i'll give you the rundown with some minor ones
the plot is really complex, but what you learn over the coarse of time is that these four kids, john, dave, rose and jade, are playing a game called sburb. when you start the game, it leads to the Apocalypse of you're world, and you and your teammates are transported into "the medium" where you fight monsters, gain levels, discover your different abilities and aspects of the game, later learning the whole point of the game is to create a new universe. but the kid's game has some kind of glitch, making the completion of their game impossible. later on you meet the trolls and find out that they created the human's universe in their game, but karkat fucked up and it was because of him they can't make their own universe. plus there's this jack guy who's a like a mass murder and fucks everything up and kills a ton of people

they explain certain things closer to when you find them, and learn new things as it goes on
besides, they entertain you with humour a lot
