this video is a bit outdated i dont really do it like this exactly anymore
but first i draw base skeleton keyframes, just a bunch of circles to make sure i wont go out of shape in later keyframes.
then ill draw a rough sketchΒ keyframesΒ with a new layer over the first base skeleton
then ill draw another one with more refined lineΒ keyframes, so to answer your question, i dont clean lines, i just draw new ones in a new layer that are clean to begin with over the rough ones.
i then color and shade said clean lines.

Strangely enough, just a minute ago I was thinking "I wonder how some people do their animations" since I want to start animating myself, then "BAM" this is first in my deviations box! Nice job btw, really helpful!

I'd say frame by frame isn't good idea... there are alot easier ways and alot faster ways, however effect in the end might not be as good as frame by frame, depends on how much dedication you put into it

Thanks, I'll keep that in mind! Might just experiment with different techniques to figure out which one works best for me :3

Well, every animator I know (including myself) started from MS Paint + Movie maker.Frame by frame, really slow and terrible animations, that's what almost every animator starts with. Then, when you learn what's the principle in making movies, either you keep getting better at movie maker + MS Paint having MAX 50% of how good it could be, then you either switch to Photoshop + Movie maker making it into like 60%-75% of your MAX. After that most people change Movie maker into Sony Vegas, Maya or any other animating program which has NOT frame-by-frame technique, so you don't have to draw every frame separately, but just save every part you want animated separately in Photoshop, then put them separately in Sony vegas/other animating program, then use the animating option (in Sony Vegas it's "Zoom" which is fun cuz wasnt intended to be used for that, yet works!) and make every limb, every foot movement etc. VERY smooth and very easilly compared to drawing the movements on separate files, not to mention the more limbs you want animated the more work you have to put in frame-by-frame, while using "zoom" effect you can make whole animation which normally takes months in frame-by-frame in 1 day or less

I'll have to give that a try. I have done the whole MS Paint + Movie Maker animation before, it actually turned out pretty decent! I'll have to get started on all of this on my next days off D:

Thanks again for the help! ^^

To be honest If I were you I wouldn't listen to such self-appointed animators but search for myself.
You can find lots people making great animations and writting how they make them(And I tell you, best of the bests make only frame by frame animations, often/but not always using 3D as help)
Here you have some helpfull links if you want to learn to animate:
[link] [link] [link] some steps by steps
[link] [link] [link] some movement references

Well, search for yourself, there is lots of animations and "How to" on youtube and deviantart. I would reccomend you to search for Disney animation step by steps, animatics, storyboards, advices etc because Disney is the best archer for most proffessional animations, also for Japanese anime.
And take notice of what programs do people use, it's often written in description because there are lots and lots of programs good for animating different things.
I think the most common is Photoshop for painted parts, flash for training and sketches, and most importantly After Effects for making it look proffessional. But there are lot more and better programs, like Toon Boom Animate Pro which is really great but very difficult program.
Well... just make some research if you want to learn something
Good luck!

Thanks! I'll make sure to do some research on the programs that are right for me! And thanks for the links, they'll really come in handy c:

No problem, however I give you one tip: don't try to make animations ASAP, instead try to improve your shadowing etc and animating style, try to keep it with at least 10 frames per seconds (10 fps) it still isn't smooth enough, but almost max you can do to make it look good AND not spend way too much time over animating each frame. With every video try to raise fps and once you reach 32 fps I recomend trying photoshop and movie maker, then once you perfect Photoshop layers system try to make it with sony vegas and photoshop.

Drawing frame by frame? Bleh.

bocodamondo In reply to BenioxoXox [2012-10-18 15:13:11 +0000 UTC]

well. its allways how i work. or atleast the easy way for me. tweens are to difficult to master. if a amateur uses tweens like me. the animations looks horrible and so unatrual . FBF is much easier on that

BenioxoXox In reply to bocodamondo [2012-10-18 15:34:13 +0000 UTC]

Well, I use photoshop and Sony Vegas Pro 8.0 and effects are marvelous since I learned how to do what. Took me like few months to learn, but worth it - alot faster progress, alot better effects, basically it's awesome! Frame by frame takes more time, it's mostly not as fluent animations, but a bit better shading, UNLESS you are good with animating shadows as well, then you're a beast!
