Description

I had this comic before I did the song rewrite and only posted bits of it on tumblr previously in 2020, but I'll just post the whole thing here I guess! The lyrics and direction are obv different than this comic, but ah well!
RAPUNZEL:
This has to stop now
Whatever it is that you’re going through,
we’ll fix it together - me and you
Just like we’ve always done!
EUGENE:
No! This has to stop now
This isn’t the way we were lead to go
And deep down inside I think you know
It’s how we’re meant to be!
(Eugene sighs)
EUGENE: Rapunzel, listen…
RAPUNZEL: I’m listening
EUGENE: I know it’s hard to see
RAPUNZEL: What is it?
EUGENE: But if it’s for your own good-
RAPUNZEL: Well?
EUGENE: You have to set me free
RAPUNZEL: I can’t agree
RAPUNZEL: … Eugene, please listen
EUGENE: I’m listening
RAPUNZEL: I swear it’s not too late
So before another line gets crossed
and everything we’ve had is lost
just wait…
EUGENE:
(Sighs and speaks) I’m sorry…
But I can’t wait.
I never knew the depths of “star-crossed lovers”
Till I met the star that outshone all the rest
And I’ve fought the best I could
But I’ve been shown just where we stood
Me here in the darkness
You there with the blessed
And the light that once had healed me, I’ve discovered
Is a light that cuts and cleaves me with its glow

So I rewrote the song to go along with the Moongene direction instead… I didn’t do Tangled stuff for a while but was inspired suddenly and jot it all down within 3 hours through the late night hours a couple days back.
The art bits are from a comic I tried way back that I couldn’t figure out how to write out and kept thinking a song might fit better, since that’s where there was one anyway. So I just went with the original!
I wasn’t sure if the song would work with this tone instead, but guess I managed. I did have in mind that this orchestra cover might work nice for it (tho the end doesn’t exactly sync up with the original). The healing incantation motif fits more and causes more pain in this case. : ) I wasn’t that crazy about the lack of drop in this version, but it works in this case with it not feeling triumphant for Eugene but more of a self-martyrdom.
Maybe one day I’d like to try storyboarding it out. Would be nice if I could get anyone to do a cover tho preferably.
