Description
Β©MARVEL/DISNEYBecause X-MEN: FIRST CLASS is going to be a big cinema event even in my city & country, some comics guys got an invittion from the movie's distributors to supply original sketches or finished drawings based on characters appearing in the mutants prequel for a group show.
I got invited too - so here is how it all went: my A4 drawing is done on a 'muflon' paper akin to bristol. I think it's made in Slovenia. Nothing special but takes pencils splendidly and behaves quite ok when ink is sloshed over it.
Wanted to go crazy with White Queen and someone else in the visual but then I got this idea almost like for an old fashioned movie poster - all collage, figures overlapping each other etc. Penciling's done with 2mm F lead in Staedtler Mars clutch pencil, female figure is penciled with soft B 0.7 mechanical microlead technical pencil and after rolling kneaded eraser over the rough, 2mm H pencil was used to kind of tighten the sketch.
Inking was executed with a Pentel fountain brush [brush-pen] and -- RAPIDOGRAPHS that I haven't used in ages. I liked drawing with the useless needle pens without forcing the line weight with repeated strokes. Just went with the flow and accented certain parts of contours with a brush touch-up.
---
Now my proverbial lack of ability to nail the likeness of characters... others happen to have the same problem so no big deal... but in spite of improvizing with the looks of male characters I just had the problem with the White Queen... it's her skinny, athletic appearance that I just couldn't find erotic or inspiring for drawing...
... then it hit me..! Beautiful Ivania, a girl that posed for Frank Cho's drawing masterclass as Ms. Marvel just popped into my mind and I drew her from memory persuaded that she's The White Queen in my mind. I managed not to deviate from the photo of Ivania [link] too much, I hope.
---
My drawing shall join the rest when the exhibition of originals is staged in the foyer of a movie theatre where the opening night for X-MEN: THE FIRST CLASS happens in a few days. I don't know how many artists will contribute their images but I wanted to participate so I've made this. The word MAJDAN [pronounced 'maydan'] is the name of an art community centre where I teach my cartooning class every Saturday.

Looks awesome! Ivania Turner is a friend of mine (this link was on this pic, on her fb page) You did an amazing job, and I think it looks a lot like her.
Kudos getting asked to sketch

Dear Daisy,
BIG Thank You.
The reason this sketch [ I'm actually all but happy about ] is still here is Ivania and the fact that she likes it and has it in her FaceBook
She is The Stunner and I had to try to draw her... without satisfactory results but I am truly humbled and grateful that she likes it. I am sorry I didn't manage to do this better, I am so hopeless when it comes to the likenesses... but for the newest X-Men movie this spring they've organized this comics exhibition in Belgrade, Serbia, for the opening night and I participated in the big draw-out the best I could at the time...
I wanted to snail-mail the page to Ivania as soon as I get the original back after the exhibiton was finished and taken down but nobody knows where it is -- apparently lost... so I'll probably draw something new and hopefully better for her as my gratitude for her noticing my doodles in spite of being friends with the great Frank Cho who drew her and had her modeling for him and artists at his comics con seminar!
Thank you for writing.
Salut,
[ ~b~ ]

She is, indeed. Gratitude to the hilt.
Please check out www.apesandbabes.com and the lady costumed as Ms.Marvel, then [link] and you'll know who has inspired me to draw the White Queen.

If I am not wrong, Jean Grey is NOT appearing in X-MEN: FIRST CLASS movie so I went after the incomparable White Queen, only ispired by a different person [link] not the actress who portrayed her in the film.

Nice work B! Looking really good, it almost got that old newspaper Sunday comic strip look to it! Great work!

Boundless gratitude, hombre.
Funny thing -- way back in the 90's I used to be upset when someone complimented me with a notion that my art's akin to the old Herb Trimpe or Dave Cockrum... John Byrne kind of art... Not that I disliked the achievements of those gents, mind - but I really wanted to be compared to Marc Silvestri or Jim Lee... Heavens forgive me - even Rob Liefeld...
.. but nowadays I am [kind of] wiser and I take it as the highest imaginable prize to be compared with the old-school art, like your accolade.
Old newspaper Sunday comic strip pages used to be considered as something worth the attention and compliments... if I've even remotelly approached something like that even theoretically - I am honoured and grateful.
Cheers, hermano!

No problem B, take a bow you deserve it! I can see Mark and Jim but GOD not Rob, leave that dude out. Anyway, when I saw the inked product it automatically made think of Prince Valiant for some reason, I think it was the line shading or somthing. Anyway keep them coming my friend!

Hehehe... Rob Liefeld.
(Don't get me wrong... he had some decent art but not my personal favorite. A lot of my chums loved his art. )

Agree, he was okay but he came at the time when a lot of artist started to fuse western style comic art with a manga style influences. He came at the right time, he did came up with a lot of characters but he never followed thru with them. Joe Madureira made the X-Men a extreme favorite among the fans in the 90's because of that fusion, also Todd McFairlane did something somewhat similar with SpiderMan and the Hulk, althought I really did not liked him at first. Jim Lee did the same but he kept his art more western style but you could see his use of manga influences. The 90's brought a lot of newer artists into the game with a different way of drawing and also computer coloring and inking brought in a new world to them as well! Cheers!

Very impressive my friend a very cool before middle and end process I especially like Emma busty! Is that Xavier or Sebastion Shaw behind her with Beast and Magneto?
I heard Kevin Bacon is playing Shaw in X-Men First class and Emms looks HOT in it!

Your kind generosity is appreciated, Noble Squire. My gratitude's boundless.
Yup - I love Emma busty - hence my attempt to avoid depicting the lean, mean, athletic and skinny Ms. Frost as shown in the movie.
You've nailed the head here -- I was in two minds whether I should go for Shaw or Xavier - the rough was my attempt towards Sebastian but then I changed my mind. Alas -- as I continuously stress the fact -- I'm not good with the likenesses [so ok - we've taken art submissions for MAD MAGAZINE off the list] so my Charlie X. looks like a character for whom you cannot be sure if he's Sebastian Shaw or Prof. X.
**sigh**
