Totally a gnarly game. I guess the change was to adhere to a certain theme or something, but I didn't find it necessary. Maybe they were trying to be new...

Ah yeah, the theme change wasn't necessarily a game ruiner. I wouldn't have a problem with reverting back to their original design for stafy.

I wouldn't necessarily say it's the "new" Stafy, but more of a theme with the game itself.

It's not a fail, it makes sense. He is a star, or rather a star-shaped creature, plus "Stafy" might have just been the Japanese pronunciation of the name.

I dunno, r is usually sound like L in english compared to R in japanese. Ex. Rucario(JAP) Lucario(ENG)
Thus in japan it would've been "stalfy" :/

Oh and in super smash bros brawl it's Stafy D8 thus, it's fail. But that's just my opinion

Tosei said that as Stafy is (supposedly) a hybrid of a star and a starfish, the names were mixed together as "Sutafi". Makes then sense, actually.

Yeah, I actually heard that, when questioned if Starfy was a Star or a Starfish, TOSE replied "neither".
I prefer to think of him as a star, though.

On the left is how he appeared in Stafy 4. You forgot his other appearances: how he appears in the cancelled Game Boy Color version and how he appears in Densetsu no Stafy 1 - 3. His SSBB and manga appearances don't count.
