I never would've imagined this is an island! How big is Stockton Island anyway...? I was just picturing a little foresty place.

Anything past f/4 and it has a really bad hotspot. Personally, I wouldnt recommend using an IR filter with the Tokina 12-24mm. If I had done more research before buying it, I would have gone with a different wide angle lens. Now I use the Nikkor 17-35mm, not as wide but much higher quality optics.

they say the plastic-fantastic 18-55 is the least hotspotting lens of the current nikon lineup...

huh, hadnt heard that before. might have to check that one out. though the 17-35mm has no hot spot at all, even stopped down to f/22.
after hearing nikon is supposed to be releasing a pro body with a full frame sensor, makes me feel even better about the 17-35. if I had gone with the 17-55 would be useless on a full frame.

Not really. It's supposed to have a crop mode for DX lenses, that only uses the middle part of the sensor just like the D2X does for more speed at less megapixels. It's only a question of software to implement in the full-frame body, therefore why not do it?

Yeah, I actually just read about that. Still, for the $'s, I'd much rather have a lens that works well with both crop sensors and full frame.

I just love your infrared images. Is it possible to shoot a regular shot and turn it into an infrared shot using photoshop?

Thank you!
I know there are some tutorials out there for making normal color images into IR with Photoshop. Never tried it myself.
The latest versions of Paint Shop Pro have an IR filter. A lot of the earlier deviations in my gallery were done using the IR filter in PSP.

everything is nicely exposed here, you might want to try f22, it'll be sharper. I dont think it would effect the picture mode since your looking forward for a longer exposure mode.

Using apertures smaller than f16 (for most lenses) kills sharpness on DSLRs due to diffraction. For infrared light, the diffraction limit is 1-2 steps even smaller.

hmm, didnt know there was a difference with diffraction when shooting IR, makes sense though I guess. Thanks!

yeah, even the CA characteristics of the lens change in IR.

When using the IR filter with this lens, shooting at anything much more than f4, an IR hot spot becomes very noticeable. This is true for many lenses.
Thanks for the comment.

this is lovely! how do you get the sky to remain blue? white-balance, fiddling? if so how?

BrianWolfe In reply to paddimir [2006-12-12 02:44:33 +0000 UTC]
Thanks man!
Color swap in channel mixer will make the sky blue. Open up channel mixer, on the red channel change the red value to 0 and the blue to 100. Then on the blue channel change the blue value to 0 and red to 100.
Then use curves to fine tune.
