Description
In 2372, whilst on a reconnaissance mission, the U.S.S. Lancelot discovered a region with numerous planets and moons rich with minerals or ripe for colonisation. Science Officer Rachel Croft, with the limited resources onboard cataloged as much as she could, but by the time they returned to Federation space, war kept Starfleet from sending a dedicated science ship to the region until 2376. When the surveyor arrived they found the cluster of systems to be barren and lacking much in the way of metals and resources Starfleet needed to help rebuild, so further plans for the region were cancelled.Croft couldn't let the greatest discovery of her life just slip away, not without answering the burning question: what had happened in four years to turn a veritable 'Eden' into something so lifeless? Not getting anywhere through official channels she and Chief Thorev, the last surviving member of her original science team, took extended leaves of absence and sought out a ship that could take them back, so they could try to answer that question. The old Ju'day-Class Eclipse was the only ship willing to take them.

They're civilians in space but honest, hard-working men and women who opted for lives away from Starfleet (well most of them didn't put on the uniform). No criminal activity here.
