Description I've always been a big reader / fan of H.P. Lovecraft's fiction. Love his crazy, cosmically horrifying imagination, his wordy, luxurious writing voice, and his dark, unswerving certainty regarding the unavoidable, miserable future for the pathetic little human race.

So I've been struck by the urge to do a series of illustrations based on his work.

Here's my illustration for: "The Colour Out Of Space".

This is one of Lovecraft's better-known stories, it has been reprinted again and again in many of the different collections that have been published over the years. A very easy one to find if you decide to go looking for it.

The fate of the poor farmer and his family is horrible enough... But the part that creeps me out the most is the discussion of the farm animals "falling apart".
I always had a thing for sad, tragic, tear-jerker horror stories, and "The Colour Out Of Space" is one of the best ever written.

Damn, I just got into reading Lovecraft a couple of months ago, and this is the most recent story I read. I think it's the best one so far, it really drags you into the fear and hopelessness of those involved and doesn't fully let go even when you put the book down. I guess it's the slow corruption of the human mind and body, and the stoic apathy with which they face it that does it for me.

Moving on to the actual picture, I love it. The colour you've used matches the mood I imagined through the story, and the face of the mad farmer is genious. It just looks so hopeless and sad.

Apart from that, nice gory details and linework. I'll hang on to this one, if you don't mind.

Thank you from me and Mr.Lovecraft! I agree with your sentiments. He was a solid writer from the start but his later stuff, that he did at the very end of his career just before he died, was really engaging. We can only wonder where he would have gone from there...

I think deviate art should have a contest based on Lovecraft. My favorite has been "mountains of madness". Well done story written about one of the last unexplored lands on earth. By the way, did you notice transformers reference that in the first movie?

This is the scariest Lovecraft's story I ever read... I had to sleep with my lights on for a week after that. It's easy to laugh about it now, but I wouldn't like to read it before bedtime anytime soon

A very fitting illustration

i love it! thats great, but i for some reason i pictured what can best be described as a bloated ash covered living corpse breaking pieces of itself off as it crawls to the floor telling ammi to get away... i just finished this story yesterday, i was able to find the complete fiction for only 12 dollars! but regardless, i love it!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

BryanBaugh In reply to xXNECROTISEDHATEXx [2009-01-14 20:19:26 +0000 UTC]

Yes, the scene with the bloated ashen thing on the floor is real good and scary and heartbreaking all at the same time. My illustration here is not intended to depict any specific scene in the story, so much as to represent the basic idea of the story as a whole. Like a movie poster or book cover.
