Description
I've always been a big reader / fan of H.P. Lovecraft's fiction. Love his crazy, cosmically horrifying imagination, his wordy, luxurious writing voice, and his dark, unswerving certainty regarding the unavoidable, miserable future for the pathetic little human race.So I've been struck by the urge to do a series of illustrations based on his work.
Here's my illustration for: "The Colour Out Of Space".
This is one of Lovecraft's better-known stories, it has been reprinted again and again in many of the different collections that have been published over the years. A very easy one to find if you decide to go looking for it.
The fate of the poor farmer and his family is horrible enough... But the part that creeps me out the most is the discussion of the farm animals "falling apart".
I always had a thing for sad, tragic, tear-jerker horror stories, and "The Colour Out Of Space" is one of the best ever written.

Sorry, no... I realize "The Shadow Out of Time" is widely considered one of Lovecraft's "best stories"... but it's not one of my personal favorites. I love how it starts out, but I find the latter half disappointing. A lot of really ingeniously written build-up that didn't pay off at the end... in my opinion.

For all my love of killer bugs, zombies and tentacled martians, I must say I consider the vague and abstract "color" one of the most frightening, disturbing and imaginative "monsters" of all time. Easily one of my favorite horror stories ever written, and you've done a kick-ass job illustrating it. It's just how I always pictured these poor saps, and I appreciate the alien appearance of the trees in the background, which even look like they're in motion...MOTION WITHOUT WIND!!! NOOO!!!

This is amazing. The macabre element fits in perfectly. By the way, even though it wasn't a horror movie(but still makes me paranoid), do you think you could try a Terminator artpiece? Because i'd love to see something mechanical.

Next to Shadow over Innsmouth it's my favourite story (and I even adapted it to my horror podcast)! You got it right!

Thanks for that compliment. Yeah, Shadow Over Innsmouth is my #1 favorite Lovecraft story, also. But I just believe in "saving the best for last". So stay tuned!

This is fantastic! I really like the almost engraving-like texture to it. And the gore of course, marvelous. Definite fav!

Man, I really have to read some of Lovecraft's stories sometime...
Anyway, amazing job with this; the beige color scheme gives it a "penny-dreadful" look, and I absolutely love your ability to make skin and muscle look like they're actually sliding from the bone. I gotta learn how to do that.

It seems to me that "The Rats in the Walls", "The Outsider", and "Cool Air" are the only Lovecraft stories most people have even read... my guess is because they are among his shortest, and most often re-printed. But I always find Lovecraft's longer stories to be more entertaining and rewarding. So I tend to naturally lean in that direction. But there are definitely a few of his shorter stories that appeal to me very strongly and rank among my favorites... and you will see a few of these illustrated in time. But I must apologize because "The Rats in the Walls" is not among them. Sorry!!

its strange, because as much as i like reading his works,i can very rarelly remember them and often get lost before i finish them...
Good thing i have nothing to do after school and that im stuck in a small village with virtually 0 entertainment,i'll re-read stuff at least..
Looking forward to your next piece mate!

For some reason, this story scared the hell out of me. Maybe because it was late at night, maybe because I'd already read several other Lovecraft stories before getting to this one, or maybe it's because I live in a small farming community... Whatever it was, I couldn't get to sleep after reading this story!
Awesome illustration. I love the falling apart animals!

When I was just a kid reading The Hitch-Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy, I laughed my fool head off over Adams' desciption of "super-inteligent shades of blue". Two decades later, I read The Colour Out of Space. Damn. It was like learning that Santa Claus was guilty of war crimes.
