Description
I've always been a big reader / fan of H.P. Lovecraft's fiction. Love his crazy, cosmically horrifying imagination, his wordy, luxurious writing voice, and his dark, unswerving certainty regarding the unavoidable, miserable future for the pathetic little human race.So I've been struck by the urge to do a series of illustrations based on his work.
Here's my illustration for: "The Colour Out Of Space".
This is one of Lovecraft's better-known stories, it has been reprinted again and again in many of the different collections that have been published over the years. A very easy one to find if you decide to go looking for it.
The fate of the poor farmer and his family is horrible enough... But the part that creeps me out the most is the discussion of the farm animals "falling apart".
I always had a thing for sad, tragic, tear-jerker horror stories, and "The Colour Out Of Space" is one of the best ever written.

You truly captured an image of melancholy in the zombies ... One would almost have to feel pity for them.

Thanks! Except... they aren't zombies. These poor souls are still alive. That's one of the horrifying things about this story!

It was also made into a decent movie in the 1960's called "Die Monster Die". Which is a great title even if it's not so appropriate for this particular story!

Ah, nice! I wondered how you were going to do a monster that was just an alien tinge of color. But the distant glow is a very nice effect.
I also liked the bit from the story that it saps the wills of people in the area so that they never quite get around to leaving, even though they could.

Yes, good points all! I only differ with one thing you said - I don't think the "colour" itself was a monster - If there was any monster in this story it was the corrosive disease itself!

Nice!
This was the first HP story I ever read, after that I never looked back.
Great feel on this one BB and your right there was a sadness to this story; sadness and an oppressive misery that only HP can do.
I might have to go and re-read this one after im done with "The Great and Secret Show" by Clive Barker; its really an underrated novel.

Thanks for your wonderful comments! Yeah, anybody who thinks that Lovecraft is too cold and unemotional in his writing should try reading this one.
I have to admit I'm not a fan of Clive Barker's fiction, not sure why, his stuff just never grabbed me. Same with all the Clive Barker movies. They always have little parts or scenes or moments that strike me as really cool, but overall, I feel like there's something missing from his stuff. Can't explain why and I don't mean to knock him, but that's just been my reaction to all Clive Barker works for as long as I can remember. Oh well!

Ya just cant win em all.
Just because you dont like it doesnt mean your knockin it!
Unfortunately people find these 2 things to be inextricably linked for some reason.
I feel the exact same way about anime/manga, so I feel ya.
