Description

The Greek Olympian god Apollo is the god of many things in the human domain. He is the god of plague and healing. The god of music and poetry. The god of prophecy and oracles. The masculine protector of the young. And the god of archery.

He is the son of Zeus and the Titaness Leto. He was born with his twin sister Artemis who is also an Olympian god.

Apollo is often portrayed as a youthful man holding a lyre or a bow or both, and accompanied by a raven. He can also be seen riding upon swans or what seems to be a carriage drawn by swans. Many people seem to report Apollo as being "God of the Sun" but my reading suggests this might be subject to opinion. He is perhaps being conflated with Helios or another Egyptian god. I want to avoid controversy but hopefully appease all parties, so I added a strong sun to the composition.

One myth says that a naiad who Apollo was chasing asked Gaia (mother earth) for help to escape him, and thus Gaia turned her into a laurel tree. Thus I tried to add a laurel tree to the composition, although it turns out that "laurel tree" is a very broad definition.

Another famous myth regards a young hero and lover of Apollo whose name was Hyacinthus. Another god was jealous of them and used the wind to cause a discus to kill Hyacinthus in a match. Apollo then turned him into a flower, which is still known as Hyacinthus or "Hyancinth" flower.

One more myth states that Apollo slayed a serpent at the Temple of Delphi and thus took control of the Oracle there. When the Oracle made her prophecies she was communicating with Apollo. And Apollo watched over the temple as well as other temples.
