Description Few individuals have had as much of an impact, directly or indirectly, upon the history of the world and the development of heroes and extraordinaries as Algernon Xidorn. While the likes of Captain Meteor may be more well known and beloved, it is Xidorn who is responsible for shaping the heroic identity and community for generations to come. Even today, his influence can still be felt through the scores of hero teams he either helped bring together, like the Allegiance, or who are directly descended from his proteges like Renaissance and the Triad. And while heroes deal with the various major villains, Xidorn secretly stands at the front lines of the true threats to Earth and universe, such as the machinations of Amelia Rostek and her masters, the multiuniversal unscrupulous corporation Transversal. Without him, the Earth would have become a much darker and scarier place than it already is.

Algernon was the creation of two members of the secret eugenics society that called itself the "Promethean Council for Human Advancement." The Prometheans were seeking to create a kind of extraordinary "master race" to help guide humanity into the new frontiers of science, geography, and beyond. Algernon's parents disagreed with the misanthropic views expressed by their peers, and so gave birth to and raised him in secret, separate from the other children of the Council. They wanted him to grow up an independent, critical thinker who could make his own choices, instead of becoming a brainwashed ideologue supersoldier. But their duplicity was discovered, and Algernon's parents were executed for their treachery. But Xidorn himself escaped the clutches of the Prometheans, his parents sending him to be cared for by Doctor Malthus and Lord Windsor, two early researchers and scholars on the extraordinary phenomena.

Under the care of Malthus and Windsor, Xidorn became more and more interested in the emerging fields of science and technology, in the changing political landscape, in the rise of a new race of extraordinaries like himself, and in the secret histories of the world and beyond. Thus he became an adventurer, traveling the world on various expeditions to faraway exotic locations or to laboratories and fairs on the bleeding edge of science. Along the way he met a variety of unusual or gifted individuals, and he began to cultivate a network of allies and companions that cultivated in the creation of the Fraternity of Philosophic Gentlemen ("Philosophic" referring the original Greek meaning of the word, "Love of Knowledge"). At one point or another this group included such individuals as Casca Longinus in one of his many psuedonyms, a pre-heroic Captain Meteor, Professor Moebius (later of The Sovereignty), and Doctor Kronos (who eventually became known as Cronus of the Titan Supremacy). Xidorn and the Fraternity also became affiliated with a similar group of individuals known as the Order of the Golden Dawn.

Over the course of the early 20th Century Xidorn and the Fraternity discovered ancient civilizations, alien races, prehistoric monstrosities, and forgotten technologies. They pushed the very boundaries of known science and technology, venturing into space and even other dimensions. They also fought an array of different threats and opponents, from evil cults to mad scientists to monsters run amuk. Most notable among those were the Black Science Order (an alliance of mad scientists and monsters), Malek Khan (scientific philosopher king of the emergent Zahrgian Khanate in central Asia), and the Prometheans' main agent, Xerxes (Algernon's half-brother).
Β
The Fraternity lasted into WWII, where it helped the Allies fight the Thule Society and the SS-Ubersoldatenkorps. But it began to break apart in this era, especially after Professor Moebius and Doctor Kronos left over personal differences with Xidorn. The final blow was when the Allies had the Fraternity disbanded and its assets swept under the purview of a subdivision of Project Paperclip known as Operation Custodian, led by one Amelia Rostek. Xidorn fought all of Rostek's attempts to seize his discoveries and knowledge and any remnants of the Thule Society and Ubersoldatnekorps he has acquired, managing to keep the bulk of it out of her hands. Using what was left of the Fraternity, he founded the Xidorn Institute of Advanced Knowledge and Discovery, intending on continuing his activities.

This institute was a front for Xidorn's research into extraordinaries. Having seen the things he had before and during WWII, he knew extraordinaries would only become a larger and more active part of Earth, and that unless someone did something to forestall it, terrible events would happen. Thus Xidorn sought out stories of people with powers, and along the way he gathered together a small group of four students. Together, they became known as the Phenomenal Five, and went public as a group of superhero science explorers, battling extraordinary villains, freaks of science and nature, otherworldly mysticism, and cosmic menaces. The Phenomenal Five, along with the early incarnations of the Allegiance, became the model for all future teams of heroes.

During this time a number of things happened. Xidorn discovered that a number of threats and enemies he had fought were all linked to a single sinister force: Transversal, a multidimensional megacorporation with its eyes set on exploiting this Earth and its universe next. This extradimensionally corrupt business was responsible for, among other things, sponsoring the Prometheans, the Thule Society, the projects exploiting extraordinaries like Brainchild (the future Renaissance, of the Star Chamber) and Operation Custodian. Amelia Rostek, as it turned out, had become one of their main agents on this side, and a number of both Russian and American black book operations were under her control. Xidorn's colleague Doctor Kronos returned as Cronus, leader of the Titan Supremacy, a group of extraordinary terrorists bent on domination over humanity, and the two rival groups clashed numerous times. What also happened was that the Phenomenal Five broke up when Brainchild died in an incident that Xidorn personally blamed himself for (not knowing that Brainchild himself had engineered his own death to go underground on his own). Xidorn retired from public adventuring, and turned the Xidorn Institute into the Xidorn Foundation.

The Xidorn Foundation was created as a philanthropic organization for the purposes of preserving the world's hidden history. Xidorn had a great desire to "keep the world strange," and protect unusual emergent phenomena from exploitation by militaries, corporations, and conspiracies like Transversal. To that end, he also founded the Xidorn International Extraordinary Academy, a school and university where young extraordinaries and would-be heroes could be around others like themselves and be able to grow up and learn without human prejudice and persecution. This school would eventually give rise to the Peacemakers, a team of young heroes made up of the school's first class who banded together to oppose the Titan Supremacy while also creating a diplomatic relationship between powered and non-powered people.

Secretly, the Xidorn Foundation continued the mission of the Institute as a front for Xidorn's exploration of the world's secret history and as a defense against forces like Transversal. While he himself is mostly retired from field activity, Xidorn can rely upon a network of special agents to carry out his mission of protecting the strange and wonderful and ultimately defeating Transversal. Nowadays Xidorn has withdrawn from public life, becoming more legend than visible figurehead, continuing his war against Transversal while also teaching select classes at the Academy. When necessary though, he makes sure to aid the heroes of the world in protecting it.

Yeah, Xidorn's pretty old. A lot of the reason why he doesn't appear to be as old as he actually is comes courtesy of his basically being a genetically enhanced superhuman. Among the other benefits conferred upon his being a creation of the Prometheans and their meddling with human and extraordinary genetics is a significantly reduced aging process.
