Keri held the lead-ropes tightly in her hand as she stood by the gate of the mare pasture. It had been about 3 or 4 months since Truten and Sweety had made their trip to FDS, and only a few weeks ago had Sweety and her companion Lady been introduced to the large mare pasture. Lady kept the other horses in check when they tried to bully Sweety, and despite being a retired racehorse Lady is very slow so in return Sweety never leaves her behind.
The bay mare's stomach was becoming very enlarged from pregnancy, she was 1 week from her due date but the staff weren't concerned. All their mares went late and Sweety always looked depressed when they tried to stall her.

It was like any ordinary afternoon. First Truten raced up, then Primrose who'd spin around and nip at any horse who broke the pecking order, after that was Rocky, Rose, Sol, and then Blu. But where was Lady and Sweety?

Keri got up on the fence, gazing out into the distance. Lady stood silently on the large hill, gazing down at something just on the other side. Keri whistled again, thinking she was asleep and hadn't heard her. Lady looked back before returning her gaze to the same spot.

That's when Keri got a bad feeling in her gut. She jumped the fence and ran through the slippery green grass. It had rained just the night before. She neared the hill, placing a hand on Lady's shoulder as she gazed at the figure in front of them. There Sweety lay, a helpless whinny escaping her throat as she saw the brunette.

Keri BOOKED IT back to the barn, tripping once and splattering mud all over herself. It wasn't the first time it'd happened though so she ignored it and flung open the door to the barn, running to the lounge to find Zachary. Zach looked up in alarm, standing up at Keri's urgency.

"CALL THE VET NOW!" She yelled, running to the tack room and pulling out a tail wrap, a mini foal blanket, and a blanket for Sweety.

"What's going on?!" Zach grabbed Keriana by the arm, stopping her momentarily.

"Sweety's giving birth in the field and she can't get up! Let me go!" She screamed, pulling away from him. Before he could utter another word she was gone.

Keri bent down by the bay's head as Zach wrapped her tail up. "She's bleeding a lot back here.." Zach whispered, obviously concerned. That sent Keri's heart racing. Zach had been here for every birth at this barn, and anything that could've gone wrong he'd been through. If he was worried.. that scared Keri. Every so often the mare's eyes would flutter close or lose their light and Keri would wake her up, urging her to keep pushing.

"Oh deary.. I understand what you're going through. Trust me.." Keri pet the mare's face, trying to calm her down. "Where's the stallion that did this to you?"

Zach looked up, raising an eyebrow at her.

"What?!"

"Why are you talking to her?"

"To calm her down."

"Pffsh, right. Because I bet you just LOVED it when people tried to talk to you when you were giving birth."

Keri rolled her eyes, falling silent as she watched Sweety carefully. The vet would be pulling into the barn soon.. but would it be too late?
