Description
Overall bird's eye view and ground plan for a castle-village, done as a commission for a novel writer. There were specific requirements for the layout, style, building purposes, and location/geography.The general idea is that an original castle was built over at a later time, similar to European castles, so the original turrets were used for different purposes and built out as such. You should be able to see the original turret in most of the main towers. The barracks tower and armory were left mostly original except for the connecting suspended footbridge. The architectural styles of the later additions and castle village buildings is influenced by Northern European town architecture, Scandinavian timber churches, and, to a small extent, the "Skyrim" series of games.
The big bridge up front to the right I imagined as a medieval suspension bridge, so it has components based on fortifications, Gothic arches, a bit of fantasy, and, of course, some kind of suspended timber structure in the middle, perhaps supported by giant intertwined ropes or some such.
The island itself is very steep and has a number of small tunnels, caves, possible secret entries, shacks for the fishing boats, and just a little bit of sparse vegetation and a few small trees.
Technical description: Done freehand pencil on paper, this is an original design for a castle. Pencils used were F, 2H, and 4H. Then I scan, clean it up, and gently tweak the color. Finally, I label it.

I love it, except for the bridge. I don't anyone set in a medieval European fantasy setting had the engineering skills, materials, or need to create a suspension bridge. But then again, it is fantasy.

I pushed the limit there and imagined that they used multiple intertwined ropes as cables maybe, certainly it's technically possible, but rope would have to be checked and replaced from time to time. Yes, it's fantasy, so strict rules don't apply.

May I ask what size the paper is?
Incredible work by the way - I truly wouldn't have believed this possible. There's this amount of detail which still leaves enough room for imagination.
Were you always that good at drawing or did you acquire that skill through practice (and did it take you long if so)?

Yes, 8 and a half by 11 inches, very small for the size of the castle. I can't get details in there like I usually do, like windows. That's the biggest size I can easily scan. I had the gift (or curse) of being able to draw 3d objects, especially mechanical or geometric things, since 10 or 12. But this reflects thousands of hours of draw time, architectural history study, travels, etc. Ever read Malcolm Gladwell? You need 10,000 hours to become a master of anything!

Well, that is no surprise. I never read his books but I definitely believe it. Do you think you are a master at it yourself? Because that, I think, is one of the most difficult parts - realizing it - everything is a dynamic process.
And do you make a living out of it? - designing or drawing? Or are they "merely" excessive hobbies for you?
Why do you say it is a curse at the same time? Do you feel compelled to keep drawing ... ? I can't really see the downside.

Same as a musician, not easy to make a good living. Thousands of musical geniuses out there, most make little to nothing, even with "10000" hours in. Hence the curse. I do "light" construction/renovation work as well as architectural design and illustration, and just experimenting a little with Deviant commissions...

Thank you again, so much, for accepting my commission. It looks better than I had imagined it! You captured the architectural style perfectly, and I feel my novel will appear much more complete with this in it.
To all deviants out there, this guy is awesome. Seriously. He is the best.

Thanks dear, and thank you too! Glad you like it. The ground plan will come a little later, let this stew a bit, and I might make a tiny change here and there, then I'll sketch a ground plan and attach it.

The problem is finding a developer who would be willing to pay for that much detail. Most details and more costly materials get value engineered out of the project during bidding.

I think I'd call the usual modern practice "short-term profit engineering". Light on value.

Yes. It's a quasi craftsman/modernist thing. Well...I guess I should specify...which one. The one I know is in WA. He has a dozen. lol.
I like the Biltmore Estate and the Hearst Castle better. Old money knew how to do extravagance better.
