Description
Overall bird's eye view and ground plan for a castle-village, done as a commission for a novel writer. There were specific requirements for the layout, style, building purposes, and location/geography.The general idea is that an original castle was built over at a later time, similar to European castles, so the original turrets were used for different purposes and built out as such. You should be able to see the original turret in most of the main towers. The barracks tower and armory were left mostly original except for the connecting suspended footbridge. The architectural styles of the later additions and castle village buildings is influenced by Northern European town architecture, Scandinavian timber churches, and, to a small extent, the "Skyrim" series of games.
The big bridge up front to the right I imagined as a medieval suspension bridge, so it has components based on fortifications, Gothic arches, a bit of fantasy, and, of course, some kind of suspended timber structure in the middle, perhaps supported by giant intertwined ropes or some such.
The island itself is very steep and has a number of small tunnels, caves, possible secret entries, shacks for the fishing boats, and just a little bit of sparse vegetation and a few small trees.
Technical description: Done freehand pencil on paper, this is an original design for a castle. Pencils used were F, 2H, and 4H. Then I scan, clean it up, and gently tweak the color. Finally, I label it.

God I love your building designs & drawings, it makes me wish I had the funds to request a commision for my very own castle drawing.

VERY cool stuff! Tell me, is the owner of the castle a good guy or a bad guy? Judging from the overall feel of the thing, he's a good guy (she?). But it would be an interesting flavor to the piece to know if they were generally good or bad.
Or do I gotta read the book to find out?
(... grin ...)

I've played symphonies, rock & roll, big band and country. But, in my soul, I'm a bebop drummer. Been playing for over 50 years and made my living with music for about 12 of those years. Played for/with lots of "famous people" and in general can hold my own when in the company of all but that breathtaking 1% who astonish us with their brilliance. Still, making a living in music these days can be a bit, you know, challenging.
I have what one of my ex-wives calls "a real job" working as an IT Project Manager for a big (really big) company. This gives me enough income to play what *I* want to play without having to sweat the bills and whether or not my music is making this club owner happy or not. (When a club owner dies, they bury them 20 feet down instead of 6 feet because - wait for it - deep down they're really nice people) (it's true!)
Sigh ...

How far down will they bury Johnny Depp? You sound a bit like another guy on here! Juggling traditional music with cutting edge IT stuff. Who do you like? Thelonius Monk? Coltrane? Krupa? Blakey? How 'bout Ornette Coleman? Good drumming on his stuff...

My heroes tend toward the studio cats. Steve Gadd (did the cut on Paul Simon's "50 ways to leave your lover") and Peter Erskine. My biggest influence was Max Roach - that guy had talent in his poop, you know?
The balance between traditional music and cutting edge IT (although, I don't usually think of HP and "cutting edge" at the same time...) isn't that unusual. Many of the guys I play with are also computer types. I think of it as A Good Balance.
Now, as far as non-drummers go, Monk was pretty amazing. My happiest moments are with guys like Dave Frishberg and Jack Sheldon (think "Conjunction Junction") but I *really* like Kenny Rankin.
You?

Lists are too long, too many bands, styles, etc. Yes, there is a direct mathematical relationship between music, computers, and even architecture!
Conjunction Junction, what's your function!

As soon as I figured out that I liked the music, I worked out who was doing it so that I could find more of their stuff. If you're on Spotify, check out Jack Sheldon's stuff as well as Tom Kubis (who writes a lot of stuff Jack sings) and, of course, Dave Frishberg and Bob Dorough. That'll lead you off to Blossom Dearie and then you're rolling toward all kinds of other stuff!
If you ever watched The Anamainiacs, you can find Gordon Goodwin (who also did the music for "Attack of the Killer Tomatoes"). Lots of Really Good Big Band stuff there (he's won Grammy's for it) and then you branch from there to, like, Arturo Sandoval and ....
As someone once said, "Everything is deeply intertwingled". It's TRUE!

A Very Scary Thing, to be sure.

This is a really nice drawing. I'm also glad that you explained your process a little bit too. How do you manage to incorporate so much detail? Or is this on a large paper size? Not to mention your shading techniques! You have some really imaginative and beautiful buildings in your gallery overall, though. Great stuff!

It's on a small paper size, 8 and a half by 11 inches, max I can scan here at home. I can't really detail it out like I want, believe it or not. I'd like to get the emblem on the flags, put some window muntin patterns in, etc, but it's really too small for that. I actually have a 4 or 5 step tutorial on this saved. I will probably post it in a day or two?
