Description AHA! A tutorial! Fun! Now I can misunderstand my own lack of self-knowledge! ... This is a good exercise in trying to explain how I do it, since many have asked, and especially because I paint watercolor on toned paper, giving an effect closer to gouache, in an impressionist style. Any comments, suggestions, ideas are welcome. I might do another one since scanning between steps is easy. The initial drawing was very light and would not show up well as a separate step.

Yes, almost an obsolete medium in the design profession when it used to be king, I use watercolor like gouache...

Yeah, especially looking at some of Syd Meade's stuff o.O my teacher did a lesson on gouache, and I really like using it! I like how diverse it can be.
I like the way you use watercolour, I might try it out later on ^.^

Excellent choice. At that time gouache was the medium of choice for car designers and illustrators. You can get very flat even tones which reproduce well. Syd's stuff is dated in sense. Many cars look like 1973 LTDs and Cadillacs that went through an extreme hot-rod shop. His technique on those fantasy retro/future pieces like the giant robot horse race piece and another one I saw, with mid-tone only atmospheric backgrounds, monochromish, dusty looking is outstanding. My bro was a car designer taught in Detroit in the mid 80's and this was their medium. It's now obsolete.

Good. Watercolor is tricky and demanding. You can always re-do or edit the computer software but not this! I wonder if I should put a description of each step? Would that be better or not necessary?

I know I'm two years late to answer this but a description of the steps always helps

Great tutorial! I like your work and it's neat to see a step-by-step progress of one of them!

Yes! A few ongoing discussions led me to try this. My technique is different than other watercolor specialists. Even I don't understand myself so it's good for me.
