Hi from ProjectComment !
First impression: Yep, it's a zebra, and I love zebras Big. bold stripes and lovely shading make for a striking thumbnail. But there was something odd, so I had to get a closer look...
Anatomy: Since it looks like you're going for a realistic style, I decided to track down an image in a pose similar to this drawing in order to refresh my zebra anatomy. Maybe I even found the one you referenced: commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Fil…
Right now, your zebra's head is short and wide, like a pony. Zebras, however, have longer, narrower faces. The muzzle is square, a problem my equine drawings suffer from time to time. If you look at the photo's muzzle, you will see it is much smaller and rounder--lengthening the face will help bring the muzzle to the right size and shape. What I would suggest if you want to get more accurate proportions in your drawings is to use your pencil to measure distances between parts of the image, as explained in this link: www.explore-drawing-and-painti… . This was one of the coolest things I learned in a drawing class. Another trick I use is to use one part of the face to make a rough measure the rest. For example, the zebra's face is a about three and a half ears long and about one ear width fits between the eyes.
Though the proportions are off, the details of the face are lovely. I love the hair in the ears and the little bumps on the muzzle!
Shading: Your shading is very nice. The hatching and cross-hatching simulate f hair, and the shadows are consistent, giving the impression of soft lighting from the left.
Here is why I clicked on your image: white lip? I thought maybe there was a part unfinished, so I wanted a closer look. Nope. The zebra has a white lip. I'll overlook that this is impossible, since zebras have black skin. Supposing your zebra did have a white lip, the shading would be a tad different. Since the hair on the muzzle is so fine, white markings show pink skin. To shade this, even the brightest part the muzzle will be a tad darker than the white hair on the zebra. This will help ease the transition from black muzzle to white mark. A quicker way to add sense to this marking would be to shade the right nostril to match the black part. I would suggest taking a look at a white markings on horses in order to guide your shading.
Adding more highlight to the zebra's eye will give him more life. Also--though the reflection in the photo makes it hard to see--zebras have horizontal pupils, like horses.
I like how dark your blacks are.
Lines: The subtle outline and the bold strokes on the stripes are great. Most of the hair is in fine strokes, while the manes and ears are wider, which creates a pleasing visual texture.
Background: None, but that's okay since your focus was to study this zebra
Composition: I like how you've presented this zebra. Just a simple head shot, off center and balanced in a way that keeps my interest.
Overall, I have to say this is nicely done! Keep working on proportions and experimenting. I'll look forward to seeing more drawings from you

Hey there, I'm from ProjectComment
your drawing caught my eye the first second!
It really represents reality perfectly! Specially the eyes, makes the Zebra look quite alive! You really have great skills!
I really like how you managed to introduce the shadows in the neck without blending the lines too much. You should sign your drawings, cause they really look amazing!
You actually made the Zebra come alive in this drawing, so great work and keep going!!!

Signing huh? I should probably work on making a signature then. Thank you!

Hi! I´m from
Guau! A very realistic zebra drawing
You have some very elaborate strokes, every detail that respects the animal, a very realistic expression in the drawing, a great combination between white and black colors, plus you have sent an anatomy that respects the zebra with everything.
In summary, you made a very realistic and super animal drawing, Go super!

You've nailed the anatomy pretty well, but what's with the white stuff on its upper lip?

Thanks! I think it was part of its pattern (I was using a reference) I may be wrong, however. I did struggle with getting the tones right for that area. Someone else made a comment that helped me with that though, so I may do a redraw in the future.

I love how this is drawn! You did an amazing job with this, and the work is definitely showing through! Something seems off to me, i'm not entirely sure what, but it holds this piece back from tying together the realistic look. I suggest perhaps some more shading, it's kind of hard for me to tell where the light is hitting save for that small eye shine. Speaking of the eye shine, I suggest making it larger to make it more realistic! Or is that how the reference was? I'm not sure, but those were all i could suggest for this!

Thank you very much! I agree with you. I think it's specifically the mark making and tone I've used for the ears and mouth that clash with the rest of the image. I'm just not quite sure how to fix it. However, now that I think about it shading those may help give them a bit more form. If I decide to do a rework of this I think I'll increase the tonal range and decrease the contrast in those areas too.
The other thing I think is off is that the snout is a bit too short. I should probably work on really getting accurate proportions in the early stages of my drawing process.
As for the eyeshine, I think the reference was like that. I'm not sure however because I'm a plonk and ended up losing it. Either way that's another thing I'll change if I rework it.
Thank you for your advice, you've been a massive help! <3
