Potential rat-themed protagonist digimon for my fangame. Here's the other nautilus themed idea:

Anyway, Toskmon! From Ratatosk, the messenger of the gods in norse mythology. He was actually a squirrel but MEH xD I was having trouble thinking of a good name and that's the best I could come up with. Another idea was Zuckmon after the Zucker, a positively adorable super chubby breed of lab rat. But then I learned that they're deliberately bred with all sorts of debilitating diseases and the chubbiness is to make them worse >_> They're primarily diabetes experiments >_>
Lab rat stories make me really sad, I wish I hadn't read that T^T

So, it is a rat! Of adorbs! Rats are such awesome pets, they're all cuddly and affectionate and INSANELY playful and loyal, like the tiny equivelant of dogs. And yet nobody knows this because they're irrationally hated while mice are beloved, despite mice being infinately more boring, less clean and more likely to infest your house >_>
Its almost comical how completely different they act from mice despite being so closely related. Mice just lay around being grumpy sods while rats are actually capable of getting attatched to a human and DOING things instead of just sitting in a cage like a novelty ornament. Heck, a well-trained rat can be outside the cage quite often and even sit on your hand or ride on your shoulder ^_^ Lil walkies! ^_^
So I figured Toskmon would work really well as a cute Guilmon-esque huggable innocent digi-buddy! For the design I basically just... drew a rat. And sat there for half an hour debating how to digitize it, because a rat is already practically perfect! So that's why its not exactly an interesting monstery design aside from extra eyes in strange places and a fancy pattern.
I was considering giving it a weird mouth like in the doodles on the right but I dunno if that's too stupid-looking or too creepy. The minimalistic beady eyes and tiny smile looks so cute but the sideways monster face is like.. an actual monster trait so she isn't merely an ordinary rat.

*gets distracted and tickles Toskmon's belly*

Well I was thinking something like giving the species a Ratatosky personality. They love to run around doing errands for people and delivering letters, and thus they're friends with Tsukaimon (Henchmon in my translation). Since Henchmon basically does the same thing but for the bad guys, I thought it'd be cute if they had an odd friendship. A species-wide one, to the degree that they'll always refuse to fight each other no matter what. According to legend there was once a Toskmon and a Henchmon that ran back and forth along a giant tree delivering messages between an evil overlord and a legendary hero, and they became buds while their two masters fought it out. Eventually they teamed up to defeat both those twonks and claim the tree for themselves, and ever since then the two species have had an eternal bond of BFFness!
As for Toskmon itself, I can't really do much info until I decide its element and what sorts of attacks it has. But its very perceptive and good at dodging surprise attacks since the big eyes on its hips can swivel independantly and grant it 360 degree vision ^_^
And it likes to have its eyes petted by its tamer. Squish squish~ ^_^
