I've seen many images online and on TV showing Japanese wearing these masks and always thought it was because of poor air quality as in China but I just Googled it and found that it's mainly well mannered people trying to keep their colds to themselves. Who knew?

That's correct. The air quality in Japan is just fine, so the masks are purely for people who are sick or who have hay fever in the spring.

It's a rich and diverse urban landscape and that's why I'm addicted to it. I think I might do better for myself professionally if I went back to the US, or to another English-speaking country, but I just can't tear myself away.
