Description I'm very proud to present to you my very first real OC!! )) I never really thought of making one until now, but some time ago asked me about my OCs, and I got the feeling that I might be lacking something. It took a while to create her because I didn't want to rush anything, I think OCs kind of should come naturally, just "being born" so to say, and that's how it happened the day before yesterday evening - hence her birthday now being the 29th of April.
I sat around and this idea came to me, so I scribbled her and really liked here immediately. I originally wanted to name her "Pilvi", finnish for "cloud", as you can still see at the top of the page, but she kept telling me that she wanted to be called "Pirin". I suppose it has something to do with self identification issues, but we'll find out soon enough.

Anyways, in addition to the few facts I already wrote down on her character sheet, here's what I know about her so far:

She's a shapeshifter, able to adopt a certain animal's traits by will if she needs them. She does, however, not fully change into that animal, but merely get some characteristics like ears and tail, or her arms change into wings when she's trying to change into a bird (which looks rather ridiculous and she's embarrassed about it, so she refuses to do that again). All other shapeshifters around her can transform fully, so she's kind of handicapped and got bullied a lot by the other kids at school, to the point where she stopped transforming at all and grew really lonely.

Her kind of shapeshifters use a special form of energy to change their appearance. This energy is located anywhere in their bodies, different for everyone, and can be locked by its owner through a specific kind of material they make themselves and that can be woven into any kind of fabric, depending on what the owner needs. They use this for their own safety and convenience, and so they can't shift by accident.
For example, Pirin's energy is in her long hair. Whenever she braids it and wraps her special hairbands around it, she's not able to transform. If she wants to shift, she needs to remove the hairbands and let her hair flow freely, freeing her energy.
Her little sister has her shifting energy in her feet, so she owns several pairs of boots and shoes made from that fabric to lock it. Whenever she wishes to transform, she has to get barefooted.

Every shapeshifter has very colourful hair, which is why they stick out whenever they try to mingle with humans, but nowadays where everyone can just dye their hair crazy colours, every now and again a shapeshifter who isn't happy amongst their own kin decides to live amongst humans instead - being able to hide their strange ability through their specific lock item. Pirin hears about these emigrants and decides to run away too as soon as she's old enough to take care of herself. She leaves her devastated parents and a younger sister.

Isn't it funny how the characters people create so often turn around and tell the writer/artist, "Nope, you've got it wrong - THIS shall be my name and I look like this, and I don't like that, and bla bla bla." XD I think it's my favourite thing about developing characters - when they essentially start to take on a life of their own and almost appear to write themselves. For me, it's definitely the most satisfying part of writing. And gosh, your OC sounds so interesting!! I particularly love the idea that Pirin's energy is stored within her hair, and how the hairbands prevent her from transforming. Is she an OC for a story of yours or a particular fandom e.g. Harry potter?

It really is one of the weirdest things ever. I've sometimes heard writer friends talk about that phenomenon, but now that I experienced it myself it was really funny ^^ and very enjoyable. It feels like there is a small living creature you have a very special connection to, and it tells you everything about her life, part by part... you just have to ask it.

She's from a story of mine, aside from the elements I borrowed from myth and other people's stories (like shapeshifters etc.) it's all my own creation. I plan to make some kind of graphic novel about her - like, 2-3 sentences from the story per page, written by hand in sepia ink, and with an illustration at the bottom. It will be updated page after page like a webcomic and be a complete little book in the end. I have written the first chapter already (I wrote it on the train and missed my station because I was so concentrated!! ) and had a friend who studies English proofread it, so once my current art trades / commissions and the Avatar elements are done, it's gonna be my next project

I'm really looking forward to it, as I have never expected to actually create something so much my own some day. The one or other drawing or character, sure, but a full story in a finished form like a book, I really didn't dream of that.

Exactly! It's the most satisfying experience as a writer and the bond you gradually create with your characters feels so real - sometimes it doesn't feel like you're writing the story at all, but the character is telling the story through you. ^^

Oh my goodness, your project sounds delightful! I can't wait to see it.

I'm currently planning a graphic novel about her. It'll start during the next days and posted page after page, like a webcomic. I hope you'll like it ^-^

I really really like the story you built about you character and her 'world'! It's such a cool idea, I would like to see some comics or other characters! It's truly creative and good stuff for writing stories or do some moody pictures ^^!

aw thank you!! I'm happy you like it. To be honest, yesterday before falling asleep I had this idea of filling a journal with her story, written, and illustrate it myself. I even know which colouring style and font I'd use. |D Maybe I'll do it, and upload it whenever a new page is finished. In the end it'd be a real book... that'd be kind of awesome.
