I've been wondering what the trick is to that. Surely you don't do it manually? Is there some kind of filter you're using?

No filter, select everything, copy it on a new layer (ctrl shift c then ctrl v) and go to the channels, still the entire layer selected and move the red channel abit. Erase where you dont want too much of it, like the ship here
