Ammonite

Paleozoic within the body - Revolutionary Girl Utena

---------------

I should not be allowed to draw after 1 am.

Anyway.
For whatever reason, out of all the dueling songs this is the one I always remember most clearly. Not for it's tune which is more or less just as similar as the rest of them but for it's lyrics. I'm not sure what that says about me XD;;

The song plays while Saionji has his second duel with Utena. All the while he is boasting how even though Utena is wielding the sword of Dios it means nothing since you need skill to be the better swordsman. Everything in Utena has a double meaning.

Saionji continues to preach how without skill and training you can't hope to get anywhere. Your capability in life is measured by how much knowledge and experience you've managed to obtain While he's doing so his dueling song sings about the ages the Earth has gone through and it's growth through Prehistoric ages and how long the Earth has moved through them, evolving.

But by the end the song sings of regressing through the history and growth of the Earth within one's self and how we as a complex animal came from these primitive eras ourselves. It's a testament to the growth of the world. However the song goes on, singing how that the truth remains that if you strip away our evolutionary progress and growth and experience as a species and you travel back to our origins you find the most primitive of animals, the ammonite.

It's at this point when Saionji loses the duel.

Skill and experience are important because they get us where we are. But it's important to honour that growth as well and understand the foundation it's been built on. Saionji may have been more skilled than Utena, but her foundation as a character was stronger.

In Saionji's case the song was about his shortcomings, however I believe in Usagi's case it would be a positive message because even as a little kid Usagi has always been a nice person. And with a strong starting point it means his growth and accumulated knowledge is stronger as well.

However, stripping away personal experience and acquired knowledge till you have nothing but your inner self left is an unnerving and frightening experience because when you do so, you have nothing left but your true inner essence, for better or worse. Seeing yourself and who you truly are can be a terrifying experience regardless of what kind of person you are.

.....

or maybe he just fell off a boat into the sea in which case one of his friends had better fish him out quick.

I'm rather proud of the finished result of this picture
Everything (apart for the spots on Usagi's Kimono) was done by hand and without reference or tutorials.

I probably made Yagi no Eda's handle too long but oh well

Also... to my newer watchers. I tend to draw really bizarre stuff every now and then just nod and move on.

Drawn between 11 pm - 4 am.

This picture of Usagi looks very nice and interesting! After seeing it, I decided to listen to a song on YouTube that would suit it nicely: [link]

This is a very well done piece. The movement from light to dark, the reflection, and the atmosphere... It feels oddly calming (Just looking at the picture.) I know if I jumped in the water with a sword it would not end well.

I should have said this forever ago, but I really love the composition of this piece. The crushing cold of the depths is really tangible here, as is the fluid motion, no pun intended, with which Usagi sinks into the dark.

One of my favourite, and simplest, of your pictures.

A lovely piece; you've done a great job of rendering the character, and the colouring and lighting effects add greatly not just to the mood of the image but to the reality of the underwater environment. The dark backdrop with its subtle shafts of light and the well-observed light patterns on Usagi, from the moon shining through the waves above, are used to convincing effect – it really does look like he's fallen into one of those ocean crevices where frightening snaggletoothed fish live. Excellent work!

*spit take* With NO references?!?! And in only five hours?! This picture would've been amazing on its own, but with those two facts in mind, it's absolutely STUNNING. I love the subtle underwater lighting effects, how Usagi's clothes behave in the water, and the use of negative space at the top - it really helps to convey the depth. And the whole picture is so simple and yet - like the series that kind of inspired it - so open to interpretation.

Only critisism I can think of is that his left (our right) foot seems a little... off... a little misaligned with the rest of his body, and curving up at too sharp an angle - but there are far worse mistakes one could make with no references at all I'm insanely impressed by that alone.

XDD well I'm really glad you like it I was surprised at how little time it took myself since this is still my new way of colouring and the first time I tried this way of doing things it took 15 hours XD;; I guess that's a good sign for this new way of doing things

As for that foot yeah XD;; I always have problems drawing feet from this angle. I need to practice XP

The song goes well with the image in the case that Usagi is indeed a master of the blade. To which Utena was also a great wielder of the Sword of Dios. The image of Usagi being underwater, gives the image of a new tranquility. One must be calm like the pond, in order to gain the wisdom of The Warrior's code.

Ok only read about half the comments (duuuuude, you get a lot, don't you? Nice.)
so someone might have already said this...

I like the other version better. This version is very very cool, of course, I didn't know before he was underwater, and that adds a whole other aspect to the drawing (love how you depicted that btw, very subtle but it feels so powerful!)

The REASON I like the other one better is the details. YOu can see so much more of Usagi in the first "nekkid" rendition. BECAUSE the background is very dark. And, as I did see someone pointed out, it does add to the feeling that he's sinking into the dark depths of the ocean (And that seriously has to be the creepiest background I've EVER seen you draw), but it also makes the details of his anatomy kind of blend in. I had to tilt the screen and lean close to see his legs against the darker background.

All that said, another epic drawing. Interesting, and very different. I like it.

Rejoicing in the day,
-Mary

XD no-body else have said this don't worry.

I'm happy with this version but I do agree there's nothing wrong with the nekked version at all XDD as I said I very nearly went with it, but changed my mind at the last moment.

I think perhaps my screen is lighter than your's though because I don't have a problem distinguishing Usagi from the background but still, sorry about that

XDD also, I rather like that you say the background is so creepy because I didn't really go out of my way to make it extra super creepy which just goes to show, sometimes less is more right?
I was trying to go for 'unnerving', so I'm glad it translates that way X3

Anyway thank you very much I'm really glad you like it

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Marysmuse In reply to C-Puff [2010-03-07 15:47:50 +0000 UTC]

hmm could be a screen issue. I should try hooking my laptop up to the bigger screen and see if that makes a difference. I wonder what the naked version would look like with the background... probably you'd lose some of the creepiness factor because Usagi wouldn't look so much as if he's getting lost in that dark shadow.

Unnerving is definitely the word. Of course, I saw Jaws for the first time when I was 8 and literally did not swim for 4 years after that, so I kind of have a thing about deep, dark areas of water. lol

Interesting drawing, anyway, and it makes me wonder how on earth he got himself into this predicament.

Rejoicing in the day,
-Mary

A very beautiful and introspective piece, as always. You're quite talented-and, as always, you're your own worst critic.

The poem added a great sentiment to the overall piece-just as Usagi thrusting his 'soul' out (The long sword of his Daisho) as he uneasily plunges into the darkening depths of the sea....

Once again, quite a lovely and thoughtful piece! Just as the samurai must find himself-just as they progress through the foam and torrent of the water, while bubbles flur about wildly....

*Sighs.* Just as we must learn, and struggle against the tide, whenever it is not at our backs. A marvelous representation.
