THANK you for your work! I have been stuck in watercolor hell, trying to figure out exactly how paint works before I read this. All of your work has been enormously helpful. You are simply a genius.

I like the freedom of B, for artistic. And A has the appearance of a tighter illustration. Very cool. Thank you for sharing.

Thanks for sharing! Seeing different techniques used on the same drawing is very useful. I'd have to say that I like both... they each have their own style.

I like both painting techniques. But my favorite part is the pencil drawing underneath.

Really? In fact, the drawing was done rather quickly to start the execise. Thank you!

Wow, it was interesting to see how they both turned out! I'm partial to B, as it has that loose and impressionistic feel that I really love .
Excellent tutorial and excellent piece!

Thank you! I like both pieces, and have little, favourite details from each one of them. In any case I agree, technique B is really enjoyable to use.

RJBaudouin [2010-04-20 00:16:04 +0000 UTC]
Thanks you for this tutorial. Nice Idea to compare different technique with the same draw. I also think that basis layer is a good point to make specific atmosphere as films like "Amelie Poulain" which uses green-yellow basis color or "Kingdom of Heaven" which uses blue basis color. Thanks to show this king of renderer with aquarella ^^

cabepfir In reply to RJBaudouin [2010-04-20 13:13:34 +0000 UTC]
Yes, basis is often essential to atmospheres. It is also omportant to separate grounds, i.e. foreground from background (choosing to apply a darker basis on foreground, for example).

I like the fact that you showed two different techniques on the same drawing, because it really shows how different a watercolor painting can look depending on the technique!
This was really helpful!

cabepfir In reply to CatgirlMe [2010-04-19 21:04:21 +0000 UTC]
I'm glad you liked it
Yeah, the same drawing can dramatically change depending on technique used. And there are many more of those I showed here!

CatgirlMe In reply to cabepfir [2010-04-20 18:49:11 +0000 UTC]
And each person has their own way of painting, so even if two people used the same technique, it would still come out different

Gold-Seven [2010-04-19 13:56:47 +0000 UTC]
Very nice technique and well explained! You know, I usually do a mix of A and B. My workflow is actually B, but to achieve a very consistent colour scheme, I have something like a base colour that I mix into any colour I put on paper, so the results are similar to A although I never use a full wash like this.
Interesting food for thought, though!

cabepfir In reply to Gold-Seven [2010-04-19 21:11:15 +0000 UTC]
Yes, to add a base colour to all the rest is also a possibility (though I seldom apply it personally). But actually there are a lot more techniques and tricks! It is maybe more easy to show them directly in front of an audience than explaining it with written words.
I'm waiting for the third part of your tutorials, btw
