YAY I'm doin ALL OF 'EM!
I really like Bailey
She doesn't have knees like Wallace, so while he weeds and plants, her duty is sentry
(There are many other scarecrows, I just haven't designed them lol)

Working the fields is what scarecrows are built to do, and refusing to work costs them their animacy. It's just built into the magic that keeps them alive.
For years the farmer had mistreated his creations, but having sentience and being abused is not a fun combo. So, even despite the overpowering need to work the fields, through sheer power of will, Bailey managed to staged a coup, and the farmer was exiled to the woods, never to be seen again (likely devoured by fey).
The townsfolk were (and still are) deeply disturbed by the idea that the scarecrows- artificial constructs- are demanding to be treated nicely and are capable of fighting for it. (Think how controversial AI rights is)
Wallace was brand new when the coup happened, so he doesn't know any better, he just thinks townspeople are rude. But Bailey knows the gravity of what she did and how it affected the very concept of animacy.
