Description
2018 Edit: Too lazy to make your own map? Want yours cleaned up? I take commissions, see Fantasy Map Cartography Portfolio I'm MUCH better at making maps now but I haven't gotten around to creating a new tutorial and this one is still serviceable.Other versions of brushes:
Converted to Photoshop 7 by here. ithilwenia.deviantart.com/art/…
Converted to Photoshop 6 by here piratelotus-stock.deviantart.c…
Edit: YAY! The obscene amount of work put into this tutorial has paid off with my first DD. THANK YOU!
I'm working on my next ridiculously obscenely over the top resource pack: "Color Me Terrified: Creating the Ambiance of Horror", just in time for Halloween, containing everything you need to make creepy art. It should be live some time in October, so remember to watch.
--
Everything you could ever need to make your own fantasy map: the tutorial (should work with any digital program that supports layers), and all the resources you'll require to follow the tutorial available in a .zip folder. Just hit the download button, and view fullsize for the tutorial.
Please consider giving a fave if you download. I do not require any link/credit or alert rules for use of my resources: though all of this is appreciated, I like a favorite so others can find the resources.
I must give a nod to Jezelf, who made the tutorial from which I leaned to make maps. It's no longer online, and so I've made my own tutorial based on the method of "render clouds" for the jagged coastlines.
Resources in resource pack are not free to DISTRIBUTE, but can be used for any commercial, non-commercial, on/off DeviantArt use you can think of, which will probably be fantasy maps, but hey, if you have some other use for these, by all means.
While everything is free, if you appreciate my resources, please consider tossing a donation through my StayClassy page to NaNoWriMo , the crazed month of November Noveling that keeps me going. Your donation gives me a shot at going to their Night of Writing Dangerously, and keeps the fantasy coming!
DOWNLOAD FOR:
One Tolkien inspired font containing as many European characters as I could fit! It's a crappy font, but you get what you pay for.
One dingbat font containing most of the map icons. I hope you like exploring because they're mapped to both uppercase, lowercase, and symbols with no rhyme or reason whatsoever. The only interesting bit is, the sea serpent pair is on the two "smart" quotes, so if your program doesn't support smart quotes, you'll get the tree or mountain that's on the regular quote, and you'll have to access the sea serpent via alt codes.
Three Photoshop CS2+ brush sets, which contain all the map icons. All of them are new sketch-style brushes, but can be used with my previous map brush sets.
(The images are included for those without Photoshop. As always, feel free to convert to whatever brush format you would like, upload to DeviantArt with a linkback, and link me to it... I'll add it to the list.)
BRUSHES FOR PHOTOSHOP 7,
15 parchment-style textures for use as backgrounds.
Two different sets of prefabricated maps, in black and white, lineart, and color for the lazy who just want to get going with the stamps.
Three files of "render clouds" jagged lines for you to assemble into your own continents.
Check out my free fantasy webcomic, Between Places .

I got around it eventually but it caused a sudden halt to my map for a while because the wand wouldn't select the erased river portions for the longest time. Just was a surprise at first is all.

No, I don't use Gimp. If you would have read the comments below the tutorial, I believe I list that there's an image pack as well as a font version for the glyphs, however, so you're set, whether you'd like to make yourself a Gimp brushset or just use the font.
All of the textures are regular jpgs.

Well, just google 'how to make a GIMP brush' and you will get instructions on how to take any image you'd like and make a brush for Gimp.
Or just install the font and use the map symbol font instead. To install a font you put it into C:/Windows/Fonts and then restart the program and it'll show up in the list.

No problem! If you do make Gimp brushes from the images, you're welcome to post them on DeviantArt--just link to the original tutorial, and send me a link so I can put a link to them from the tutorial comments as well, because I get asked a LOT for Gimp brushes.

Hi, thanks for the tutorial! It is truly helpful and I wouldn't come up with such a clever solution myself.
Yesterday, I've started working on a map of a fantasy RPG world and as far, it looks better than I hoped for.
Keep doing such amazing job!

Honestly, I wouldn't have come up with the solution myself either, but people kept asking me on my map brushes how to make a map, and the tutorial I used to link to used this method--disappeared off the net. I don't take credit for the method, but I thought it was a great method that deserved to live on so I recreated the basic idea of the tutorial from memory and threw my own twist onto it. I'm glad your map looks great!

Are you using Mac or Windows? In Windows, you drop the font (.ttf) file into what's usually C/Windows/Fonts. Then restart the program you're using if you're in the middle of something, because it doesn't always show up.

Using the symbols also crashes my computer and doesn't enable things like weird textures (since lots of us like the parchment look) and painting over, which I often do when doing an elaborate map. I have tried it though, it's a great starter point... but lots of people don't want to get a new program if they can use one they already have.
I will admit that the coastline creator though is AMAZING and I used to use it to make my edges before I found a good method for Photoshop.
I'm not making you take my tons of map symbols if you don't want them.

How did you do the coloring?! The coloring is stunning, stunning doesn't even begin to cut it.

calthyechild In reply to EcazS [2013-03-26 01:15:59 +0000 UTC]
I could go on for a long time about colors, I really could. But in this picture I didn't do too much in the way of colors--it's exactly as you see. I colored in the lines with flat colors, and then dropped a texture over top, and screwed around a bit with a purple overlay layer and some levels. The texture I used is included in the download, but you can get lots of free stock textures on DeviantArt.
So I'd say in this case, good fortune! Thank you kindly.

This is really cool! But I don't have Photoshop or anything like that. Is there any other programs you could suggest?

calthyechild In reply to BlackBlossomJewelry [2013-02-23 18:35:39 +0000 UTC]
Sure, GIMP is free, for one thing, and so is Paint.net. I don't have personal experience with either of them but I know Gimp is well loved by people who either can't afford or are too moral to acquire Photoshop.
Also, if you buy a tablet that includes the 'fun pack' it includes a light version of Photoshop. And most scanners come with a free photo manipulation software, Canon for example has Arcsoft Photostudio, and these are okay to get started in digital art too. They might have very limited features, but if you're just dabbling it's nice to have a cheap program that can crop images and things.
But really, there's no excuse to not pick up CS2 if your alignment is even slightly punk. Adobe themselves have made it free for download with an activation code because it's a well outdated version. CS2 is what I used for this tutorial. [link]

XD Thank you, there was a lot of work put into it, and would've recommended it for a DD if someone else hadn't, I think! It deserved to be seen, so it could be used.
Anyway, you're welcome. I do actually have more upcoming... eventually... when I get time to finish them. D: Someday there'll be a horror tutorial and a digital painting tutorial! So keep an eye on me if you want.
I'm glad you like it and hope you get some great fun out of it!
