This was inspired by many things, the quote is from a MCR video, the subject inspired by watching the documentary "thin" I've always been curious about eating disorders I never understood them, I watched the documentary because I wanted to understand more about them--and it didn’t answer any of my questions at all... it was the same thing over and over again " I can't eat that much because I'll get fat" and I'm just kinda sitting there going " so?" they never elaborated more on that in the documentary and it bugged me. There are WORSE things in the world to be.but I already knew the answer... the answer is that people today (it's not just girls anymore it's getting boys too) are brainwashed--oh yea I said it, BRAINWASHED into believing that only one type of look can be pretty, and if you don't believe me look at advertisements 92% of all ads are pretty skinny white and young and the other 7% are minorities, it's bullshit. What has happened today? And I say today because in the past the most beautiful women of all time like. Marilyn Monroe and Betty Paige were sizes 9 and 12 and what’s the standard today? Like 6 or below? It’s a standard of beauty that is COMPLEALTY arbitrary.
Goth, skater, punk, prep, cheerleader, geek, raver WHATEVER the style if you search em on Google the "sexy" versions of these genres are always rail thin. It’s the saaaame thing just packaged differently.
Now...with all that said...MEET VIRGINIA! Some of you might remember her stick figure self in my comic "lol teenagers" [link] we'll here’s the real deal, not much different form the stick figure version I’m afraid. She was created for the simple fact that Marie Jayne needed a friend, and I needed a bad character who WASENT on drugs just to show I'm not bias I hate everyone equality. she’s so fun to draw, always I always said if yer gonna make a character rail thin do it correctly <3 because I swear some of the "styles" out there if they were translated into real people they would look like this (warning: nudity)[link] and I really really hope no one wants that. because unless you live in a third world country like Nicaragua there’s no excuse to look that way, none.
No I didn’t fuck up on drawing her legs their SUPPOSE to look like new born pony legs, expect a character sheet of her in the future. Now a lot of people ask me “gee why do you care so much about people with ED's?" I really don't because honestly? in this world it's survival of the fittest and Darwin says let the weak die, however I have a few friends who have these types of issues, I even dated someone with anorexia once, hopefully by making a character that’s so brainwashed she can hardly function people can learn and see things they way they want too, instead of how the media tells them it should look.
As for me? What do I think is beautiful and perfect?...I think everything has beauty, it's just that not everyone can see it.

Look, this image is NOT ABOUT people in Nicaragua, I said that people are starving in third world countries LIKE Nicaragua, that’s great that you have family there, but Nicaragua is STILL a third world country, where many people are poor and starving regardless of how hard they work, I know this because when I was in high school my class was raising money to buy a poor Nicaraguan villain a cow.
DOES THAT MEAN that all people in Nicaragua are poor and starving? No. Because that’s apparently what you think I meant.
Also: if you will look at this picture, This girl is not sitting in the street, nor is she poor, she lives in a nice house and she has a fridge full of food…but she chooses not to eat it because she thinks being starving is sexy. And THAT is what this image is about, how many countries are starving to death because they do not have food, but in well developed countries there are many people starving just because they want to look like a skeleton.
So, maybe next time you should READ and THINK before opening you’re mouth and going off on a random stranger because you mis-read their art work and/or something they said!

I'm so darn glad somebody is finally seeing this in the times we live.
I live in Europe, and here we are not THAT pressured to be bone skinny, but I am shocked that the american media is actually trying to say that a "bone view" (how I like to call it) is actually the only thing beautiful and sexy on a woman.
I am 13 and pretty pudgy for my age, and I keep hearing people saying to me: "Oh my god, Oana, you really should lose some weight", but I really feel proud of myself, 'cuz in this life, I don't wanna make money with my butt, but my brains. And I think all the fat girls should think just like I do.
For some girls is just extremly depressing to have a body that is not cuted and pasted from the magazines and they think that nobody is ever going to look at them, girls or boys. But I am fat, I got friends that really care about me and don't give a shit about my weight, I had a boyfriend, I got boys that liked me in the past and present, I got my intelligence and I don't think I need anything else.
But like I said, I'm not under that much of a pressure like american women are.
People really need to learn that not everyone can be skinny, is not the only body type and women that are curvy are also sexy and beautiful, and europeans are a step closer to that.

And you're right; it is sad how American media tries to sell the B.S lie of "being skinny is the only way to beauty". On another thought, in some foreign countries like parts of Africa, Rome, or Germany (to name a few) They consider plump, or robust women to be beautiful...Other nations seem to be accepting on all levels so why doesn't America? This generational fib isn't teaching anyone anything except how to think negatively about anyone who's different. Not to mention it brings oppression on anyone young or older who is struggling with self image issues.

I for one am a woman 5ft 7inches and weighing 223 pounds...Yes I know some may "gasp" but I don't care; I'm not trying to please no one but myself. I know who I am and what I'm about. I am beautiful inside and out!

and it's all about Money if the media keeps flooding the air waves with unrelaiistic air brushed and photoshoped models that arent humanly possible to accheive then they lower ameircas self esteem and if people have low self esteem they will do ANYTHING to feel better like spending millions and millions of dollars on products to make them look younger, lose weight, be prettier etc.
if people felt good about themselves they wouldnet buy these things.

I mean there is NO LAW that says you MUST be thin to be beautiful but by whats on TV you'd think that there was, as long as someone is HEALTHY it shouldent matter how fat or thin they are, hell I outweight you by atleast 10 pounds but I don't have diabetis, no high blood pressure and my colestorol is most likley lower then leila ali's I'm just over weight and I'm fine with that, my only gripe about it is finding clothing, I don't have a problem with my weight- nobody should have a problem with their weight if their pudgy, it's society that has the problem, flat out refusal to make the same outfit in ALL sizes and closed minded images in the media. it's sad.\

Don't belittle yourself...You are doing something RIGHT. For one, you are stating YOUR opinion! All these over-sensitive goobers saying stuff like "Oh that's mean! Your are against the skinny people! You are narrow minded!" My first response to that is, if they don't like it, (and can be adult about their words) they should talk about it, no problem. Any immature responders should move on. Yes people are entitled to give you feed back; but cursing at you and threatening you...that's a load of B.S!!!
For two, your artworks are going to be unique because they represent you and your personal ideas. (that's the whole purpose of "art") Why others talk shit on a person's submissions and then turn around and get mad at the comments that people leave on their pages, I have no idea....there's too many ironic terms to even touch on that subject!
And three; If a "Mo-Fo" (you should know what that means) does indeed come on your page to put you on blast because "their feelings are hurt" by what you display...PLEASE don't respond to them. The only thing you are doing is feeding "trolls", don't give them the satisfaction by getting mad, they just want to get a rise out of you. Just because you won't respond doesn't make you less of anything. They just have nothing better to do! Don't give them any "ammo" to work with and they'll shut up!
Your works "go against the flow" of bandwagons and "typical" subjects. There's nothing wrong with controversial subjects as long as it's not being on display to be ignorant (that's annoying, right?) That is indeed how majority of renaissance, and pop culture artists (to name a few medians) raised the bar to get to where we are today. I'm sure they were persecuted about their works as well, but all the B.S made them stronger!
Oh as for the clothes thing; LOL! I totally understand where you are coming from! My shirts are the HARDEST things to buy! I wear a large normally but because of my boobs, it has to be an XL on the top! It's the worst feeling ever! And jeans are bad when not all designers create your pants size equally...me wearing a 16 and then some brands (like LEVI'S) their 16's feel like 12's! Really makes shopping hard! LOL!!!
But like we both said, it's all good cuz we like ourselves no matter what size we are!

Yes but I mostly agree with what you are saying. The media has brain washed us. Even me-well, kinda. See I have Obessive Complisive Disorder and my mind tells me I can only get certin foods in certin amounts or I'll throw up (I have a phobia of that) and die. Rediciuos sounding, I know. But i do believe it. I'm getting better. I'm allowing myself more foods and candy then I used too but I am deathly afraid of vomiting. I guess in a way I have a bit of a eating disorder with the limiting food and all but my therapist says it's my OCD. I hope it does'nt devolp into anaroxia though (because I would NEVER have bulimia=vomiting=scared!)
But despite her being deadly thin and nasty, I do like the message in this piece. Be yourself even if you are overweight. Beauty is inside, not outside. It can be hard sometimes to believe that, but everyone is beautiful to me, except people like this who try too hard and end up a disgusting skeleton. But really it is a disease because the person can't always help it. Thin is a excepted thing in this shitty society and I believe that some people can trick themselfs into tinking that a skeleton is the way to be and make themselves sick and then devolp a emotional disease. I know that things like cancer and stuff is really called diseases, but things in our head like OCD and ED's are diseases to me too.

I had a childhood friend suffer from anorexia after her parents divorced. I'd rather see her because she was always in-and-out of the hospital. But she's starting to control it now.
But she wasn't doing it because she was 'fat'. It was more... because she couldn't control things like her parents' divorce and her father being very controlling and strict, she felt vulnerable. Like... eating was the only power and control she had in her life - controlling what she ate gave her confidence instead of shriveling into a ball of weeping vulnerability. Not that it makes it any 'better'.
I don't really like the label that gets stuck onto people who suffer eating disorders. They just automatically assume it's because they don't want to be 'fat'. But there are a lot of other reasons. My friend would always get bitched about behind her back a lot, because people thought she was was doing it to look 'hot'. Christ, that made me angery.
Yeah... sorry, it doesn't have much to do with anything, just thought I'd flux out from the other generic 'me good, anorexia bad' comments on here.

It's such a terribly common problem now and it's not right! This is a big issue for me, not because I have a eating disorder but you're very right about the brain washing! People see it on TV and in magazines! Super waif thin is the standard of beauty that these young girl believe! It's like it's not ok just to like yourself the way you are and why didnt the parents install these values in their children! >.< (Jeez I could rant about this all day!) I have to agree with the stuff you said. Everyone thinks they must be thin, and watch everything they eat - bullshit. You can eat what you want - just don't over do it! I have no idea what goes through some people's heads. I know SO many bulimic ass-wipes, that wonder why they collapse or feel drained, well, answer, if they didn't throw up thier food, they wouldn't feel like that! xD

but thats another thing that bugs me. most people are SO incredible stupid they seem to think thats thats all there is in life fat and skinny. if its not skinny it MUST be fat, when thats a buncha horse shit theres TONS of things in between people are just too dumb to notice.

That encyclopedia picture is not right; so many visible bones, yet she has balloon breasts. It's so wrong, but it would explain why more American white girls can be seen being skeletons; I've yet to see a black or Latino person like that. O:
