Description This is Ollie (Bryning old devil moon), A blue merle border collie from our flyball club. He is the fastest canine member there.

I just love his face markings. The rest of him is normal blue merle with the usual white markings but one side of his face is black and he looks great.

This photo isn't best quality because it is a fairly severe crop but who cares when it focuses on a face like that eh?

I'll have to try and get some zoomed in photos of his face where I don't have to crop.

Taken on Sunday 30th March at a flyball tournament.

I'm new to flyball. My current two dogs are my first flyball dogs and one only went into open racing in June whe she'd turned 18 months and the other has just become old enough now but is in season so no racing until she's done with that.

Ive been doing flyball for about 7 years now. My sheltie ran for along time but never really got many points. she is now retired, and my young border collie loves it.
I run on a team called "fur fun" as well as a team called "carpe pilam"

Work has gotten in the way of flyball a lot of the time for me so far. I hope this changes in the future. I get sick of working weekends. Quite a few occasions my sister or somebody else had to run them for me which is crap...but at least they still get to go.

They both love it...just got to get better. Sleet still sometimes tries to get away with running out...usually on the way to the box rather than when she's coming back...and Wren isn't great at turning on the box but I'm trying to work on it.

yeah, a good box turn takes a TON of work. My border collie is very sloppy.

yeah, i havent had the money to run my dogs that much so my team usally takes them to run if they need them. it totally sucks but oh well.

Yes, now I've decided I'm not going back to my nightmare job and perhaps return to college to gain more skills for something else, I also won't be the richest person around either but I'll have to see how things go. We aren't doing many tournaments over the winter because a lot of our club members don't like their dogs running on rubber matting in indoor comps...all the summer ones are outdoors on grass here. Our club runs on grass still in winter but under a massive marquee and so we are generally over subscribed along with Doncaster team who hold theirs in an indoor horse arena and lay turf down on the lanes. Many people won't run their dogs on rubber matting here because it burns all their pads off but many tournaments have no other option....even with a marquee like us, you have to rely on the ground being half decent...too much rain and there's no way. I assume over there you use something different because aren't all your tournaments indoors? Apparently, they have springy floors that help the dogs go faster?

lockNloadbc In reply to Canis-Lupess [2009-09-10 00:27:11 +0000 UTC]

down here we usally run the dogs inside, but there are Certified mats the must be put down for the dogs protection. Here alot of people will spray "new skin" or put pad protecting products on the dogs before they run.
We do have a few out door tournements. The "nationals" are run outside. Most people argue that dogs run faster out side.
There are places that have special rubber floors but those entry fees tend to be way more expensive.
What kind of box do you use?
The biggest box name around here is "premire" The world record holding teams uses them.

Ah right. Yes, over here we tend to vet wrap a lot of dogs running indoors. I know my Sleet doesn't run as fast when wearing stop pad protectors nevermind having the whole paw wrapped....she doesn't really like them so I don't put them on.
Yes, dogs over here run faster outdoors but, saying that, it seems the teams running the fastest times over your way are inside and more likely on that special floor where conditions are near enough perfect...air conditioned building, no grass sticking up from the floor, no strong breezes etc...etc...
I have a flyballing friend in Canada and she says all theirs are indoors.

We are currently still using a couple of Canadian Boxes but we are changing over to Combis when they arrive. They have a top like a Canadian with a seperate part for the balls but have a bottom part like a boomerang which is concave in shape. Most boomerangs, the ball holes are in the same part of the board that the dog jumps on so even the holes are pressed in along with the board. My wren doesn't do too well on those...fumbles for the ball a lot although the shape of it might suit her better so a combi might be just what she needs.

lockNloadbc In reply to Canis-Lupess [2009-09-10 17:16:28 +0000 UTC]

yeah, the fastest teams usally have their own special place to run and practice ALOT.

My team is lucky to practice once a month if that. We mostly just train individually and meet at the tournment. When we meet at someones house, we work the dogs for alittle bit then get caught up in talkiing xD

im not sure how to describe the primeir boxes. They are incredibly heavy, but their shape is really nice for the dogs turns, and the placement of the holes is almost perfect. They dont have a ball holder though.

Canis-Lupess In reply to lockNloadbc [2009-09-10 18:03:40 +0000 UTC]

Yes, we have trouble with training as our venue is outdoors, we have to rely on the weather being ok and the ground not being TOO waterlogged. In summer, as there are tournaments most weekends, it means the team or part of the team is at those and there's very few weekends where we actually get to train and in winter, the weather is crap and training often has to be cancelled due to rain/snow and all the rest. Also, with training being on a Sunday, work made me do shifts most sundays so I couldn't go.

I can imagine that the fastest teams do put a LOT more time into it than many others...it would be nice to spend more time on it but with work and crap, it's hard.

I've just done some practise with my two at home earlier on the slantboard...both of them are turning quite high on it...don't want them to go higher..and wren just has a little slat laying on the ground about a foot in front of it's base, sleet doesn't need anything. I added a little hurdle type thingy to see if they'd still turn after doing that...sleet wanted to run round it at first but she got the idea that I wanted her to over it and that was it, lol. It doesn't look like a normal flyball hurdle as far as she's concerned.
The ball holes on my board are quite a bit higher than on a box so they have more room to plant all their feet but as they are placing all 4 quite high now anyway, they are still all contained in a small surface area...just need them to do the same on the actual box...and to still do it when they do a full run.

Boxes over here tend to be really heavy also. They still have to be pinned into the ground because some dogs still make them move when they jump on them.

I'm not sure if our hurdle height rules are exactly the same as yours. I'm still new so would have to look ours up again to be sure of what ours are but 14" is full height and 7" is lowest...what starters or little dogs would run at. I can't remember how many inches lower than the dogs actual height the hurdle has to be. Sleet is a height dog at 13" but I reckon Wren will definitely be full height. She trained one time over full height and didn't seem to care but she's a good jumper and a naturally springy dog. They both do better with some height, especially sleet who needed it to sort out her striding, particularly on the way back..it speeded up her returns somewhat.

Is there anywhere online where you can view the premier boxes?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

lockNloadbc In reply to Canis-Lupess [2009-09-11 03:46:43 +0000 UTC]

[link]

our height base starts at 7 inches. And the high is 4 inches shorter than the dogs shoulder height.

Alot of dogs do better with higher heights. They get more power in their stride when they do.

Canis-Lupess In reply to lockNloadbc [2009-09-11 11:27:14 +0000 UTC]

Hello, I googled the premier box, lol. Apparently another team close to where we are uses one but they are nowhere near the top team in the country so I suppose it also depends on the dogs and the handlers...not just the box.

In recent threads in FB forums over here, I saw a lot of talk about dogs being that bit quicker over lower jumps than full height but they'd have to have good striding for each and not be lazy over the lower jumps.
