Total Lunar Eclipse 16/06/2011
(I just noticed that the date and time is wrong on the exif data. It was taken on the 16th of June(Australian time) at about 6:30 am).

Australia was pretty well placed for this eclipse. The weather was perfect, so I got up about an hour before it all started to setup the telescope and various cameras.

This picture was taken during the darkest part of the eclipse, when the moon passed almost directly through the centre of the Earths shadow. The colour is caused by all the sunrises and sunsets on Earth reflecting off the moon (Edit: ok, I was in a bit of a rush to post this, so i'll phrase this part better now- The red coloring arises because sunlight reaching the Moon must pass through a long and dense layer of the Earth’s atmosphere, where it is scattered. Shorter wavelengths are more likely to be scattered by the air molecules and the small particles, and so by the time the light has passed through the atmosphere, the longer wavelengths dominate. This resulting light we perceive as red. This is the same effect that causes sunsets and sunrises to turn the sky a reddish color; an alternative way of considering the problem is to realize that, as viewed from the Moon, the Sun would appear to be setting (or rising) behind the Earth.

Fantastic Photo! You're so lucky to see the eclipse! I live in Australia too but I'd forgotten about the eclipse and there was no way I was getting up early enough to see it anyway.

photo is wonderful, just can not understand how it is possible that you have exposed 13 seconds, during which time he had to move so much a moon

CapturingTheNight In reply to QSFOTO [2011-06-19 09:36:14 +0000 UTC]

Thanks I used a telescope on a computerised mount that follows the moon through the sky, so it stayed in the middle of the frame over the 13 seconds.

I heard about that Eclipse yesterday. I was quite suprised just a little. What time did the Lunar Eclipse start?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

CapturingTheNight In reply to GeneticHybridHuman [2011-06-19 09:39:46 +0000 UTC]

The shadow started coming across the moon at about 4:30am (Eastern Australia Time). It was totally eclipsed at about 5:30am, and I took this photo at about 6:30am. The moon set and the sun came up for me just after 7am.

I know the sun came after the Eclipse. I was surprised. Plus, my mother told me yesterday night that there's going to be another one in December (which my birthday is in).

Beautiful! Here in Norway I was supposed to see the second half of the eclipse, but clouds and local topography ganged up on me. The Nikon was ready, but I was too knackered to drive to a better vantage point. Waiting for the next one instead. Though when I look at yours, I think I may be in need of a bigger lens ...

CapturingTheNight In reply to inshadowz [2011-06-19 09:49:44 +0000 UTC]

Thank you very much I'm sorry to hear you missed it. The next one in December should be fairly favourable for Norway [link] It looks like it would have just started coming across the moon when the moon rises for you. I'm lucky enough to own a specialised astrophotgraphy telescope with an 800mm focal length. I wouldn't worry to much about it. I have seen some great timelapse type shots done with fairly standard focal lengths of 300 or 400mm

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

inshadowz In reply to CapturingTheNight [2011-06-19 16:46:56 +0000 UTC]

I have a 300mm (which isn't very good) and a 200mm (which is a fair bit better), and will have both on hand when the time comes.

That said, there's a Venus transit (over the face of the Sun) predicted for June next year. Last time, in 2004, I shot this one using an old IXUS 400 and a pair of binoculars In 2012 the transit won't be visible from Norway, so unless I get to travel to a more fortunate location, the 2004 shot will be proverbial it for my part. A trip to Hawaii would come in extremely handy ... And I bet the missus wouldn't disagree about that

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

CapturingTheNight In reply to inshadowz [2011-06-19 20:01:44 +0000 UTC]

Yeah I'm super excited about the Venus transit. I'll definately be getting som solar filters for the scope before that. It should be good here in Australia (weather permitting). I hope you do make a trip to see it somewhere, because as you say, this really is the last chance in a lifetime.
