Total Lunar Eclipse 16/06/2011
(I just noticed that the date and time is wrong on the exif data. It was taken on the 16th of June(Australian time) at about 6:30 am).

Australia was pretty well placed for this eclipse. The weather was perfect, so I got up about an hour before it all started to setup the telescope and various cameras.

This picture was taken during the darkest part of the eclipse, when the moon passed almost directly through the centre of the Earths shadow. The colour is caused by all the sunrises and sunsets on Earth reflecting off the moon (Edit: ok, I was in a bit of a rush to post this, so i'll phrase this part better now- The red coloring arises because sunlight reaching the Moon must pass through a long and dense layer of the Earth’s atmosphere, where it is scattered. Shorter wavelengths are more likely to be scattered by the air molecules and the small particles, and so by the time the light has passed through the atmosphere, the longer wavelengths dominate. This resulting light we perceive as red. This is the same effect that causes sunsets and sunrises to turn the sky a reddish color; an alternative way of considering the problem is to realize that, as viewed from the Moon, the Sun would appear to be setting (or rising) behind the Earth.

Note (23/06/2011): The support for this photo has been overwhelming. I'm truly humbled that so many people have found enjoyment in it. If you comment on this photo (or any of my other photos for that matter), I will reply, but please understand that I just can not get around to thanking you all for the favs. I would never get off this computer to take other photos. Please consider this one big THANK YOU!!!

several things i dont understand here. very pretty moon shot by the way! but i thought in eclipse the area in shadow is dark, as in, no light to very little hitting it. so an exposure this detailed wouldnt be possible. i also thought the moon moves rather quickly. ive only been able to get crisp shots at fast shutter speeds. how do you get a focused shot in as long as 13 seconds?

of coarse, i dont know what most of the equipment you mention is for? haha. i saw this moon rising as the sun set here. it was fantastic

Thank you very much You are right that the moon becomes very dark, which is why i needed to expose for 13 seconds. And yes, the moon would move a lot in that time relative to the Earth. The trick is in that equipment you don't know. The telescope that I used is mounted on a computerised mount that is able to track the motion of the moon through the sky, thus keeping the moon in the centre of the frame over the 13 seconds.
I'm glad you got to see it.

Beautiful shot!

I could see it in new zealand. DID YOU SEE THAT GAINT RING?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

CapturingTheNight In reply to Lady-Maaka [2011-06-19 10:28:01 +0000 UTC]

I'm glad you saw it The giant ring you mention is (I assume) a moon halo, where the light from the moon is hitting a layer of moisture/ice in the upper atmosphere where it then gets reflected. Kinda the same thing that makes rainbows. It would be a local phenomena for you at the time due to the atmospheric conditions above you at the time. I didn't see one here in Australia at the time of the eclipse, but I have seen them before [link]

Lady-Maaka In reply to CapturingTheNight [2011-06-20 06:40:02 +0000 UTC]

Ohh So thats have it works? Can it change its size? (dumb question but how)
The halo at the time was very visible here. Apparently the eclipse happen at 6 o'clock here.

There is nothing particularly special about the camera I used for this. It's the base model (or was at the time) Canon DSLR. The real trick to getting a shot like this is the telescope on a computerised mount which is able to track the motion of objects in the sky like the moon.
