The horrible weather that I have had the last few days finally cleared enough this morning for me to do a spot of meteor hunting. Even though the Geminids Meteor shower was past it's peak I did still see quite a few but they were all fairly faint and not worth posting. The most spectacular sight from this morning was this Iridium Satellite Flare. An Iridium Flare is produced when sunlight reflects off an antenna on an Iridium Telecomunications Satellite. The great thing about these iridium flares is that they are predictable. Whilst I didn't know that this event was going to happen, thanks to the Heavens Above website I now know that this was Iridium Satellite Number 86 and it had a peak brightness of -6.9 at the center of the flare (Venus is currently about -3.9 and Jupiter -2.6)

That's exactly what it is, and I say so very clearly in the description and title.

Oh sweet! I saw something like this back in the summer holidays when my cousins husband was showing me different constellations in their back garden. Then out of the blue I saw a bright light and it made me so excited^^ He told me it was the suns light reflecting off a satellite when it turned (or something). I'll neve forget that

Nice shot, not often that I see that. I tried to catch a meteor shower the other day I think it was the persids or something like that, but I failed miserably .

I wished on them, but they were only satellites
It's wrong to wish on space hardware
I wish, I wish, I wish you'd care"

Now on to your picture. To be honest every time you submit I feel like throwing my camera away and buying a box of crayons. Your work is more that astounding, words fail to describe what you accomplish.

One day, I hope that with luck and perhaps a magic lamp I will produce just one picture as good as yours
