I love these characters. I'm also happy they're not just bases that have been recoloured multiple times. Kudos for that.

Okay I have to ask, cause I don't totally understand adoptables yet (and I've been on this site how long? I'm ashamed) What is an adoptable? and What happens when you buy one?

CaraidArt In reply to Kaira-and-Rio [2012-08-26 15:06:43 +0000 UTC]
That's fine . An adoptable is a character or species design which is then sold to another person. The buyer (or winner in case of an auction/raffle/contest) usually gets full rights to the character to do with as they wish; create stories around them, commission artwork of them etcetera. I'll honestly admit that I don't very well understand the appeal, but I love creating characters and species, and so for me this is a great way to earn a little extra.

Thank you for answering. I wouldn't buy one unless I absolutely loved and couldn't live without having the character design. But I've been considering making some cause they're so cute and I like making interesting things.

I was running through old adoptable linearts and do you care if I reference these to get good at drawing fantasy creatures? Credit will be given C:

Sure, though I would strongly advise against referencing from other artists. I make plenty of mistakes myself and you'll only be copying them. The best thing you can do to get good at drawing fantasy creatures, is to know what real animals look like, as many of them as possible. A good start would be to study cats, dogs, horses and lizards/birds. If you know what they look like and how they work well enough, you can endlessly combine stuff and the more animals you have knowledge of, the more interesting your variations will become. I hope that helps .

CaraidArt In reply to CielPhanomhive [2012-07-08 09:39:55 +0000 UTC]
I'm guessing because you are using pre-made lineart. It's something people can basically do themselves if they want to, unless they don't have the means or like the particular coloration you came up with. I designed these creatures from scratch and as a result they are relatively unique. I think that's what gives them value the most.

I've done others too. I only started to use the lineart ones because they sold well and I really really needed the points. No-one would buy the ones I made myself...

Without trying to sound mean, the quality of the art and design of the characters also has a pretty big impact on how much you can sell them for. I do think I have a bit more experience in art and design than you do and most people value artwork (as well as pretty much everything else) based on quality.
You're on the same road as I am, I just started to walk it earlier. If you keep improving yourself and producing work of your own you'll eventually be able to sell adoptables for just as much.

Then sell them for a higher price? You as the artist decide how much your work is worth based on your experience and the effort you put in. If you work hard on creating a nice looking character you should sell it for what you think it's worth. If that means you'll have to sell it for 100 points then do it. People always complain about things being too expensive, but life is expensive and art is a specialist trade. If they want the character, that's what they'll have to pay for it and if they think it's too much, they can look for another.
I would step away from the pre-made adoptables. I know it's probably the easiest way to gain points but it's also one of the least rewarding and people get bored with them after a while. Not to mention that with dozens of artists who try to sell the exact same lineart with different colorations, you have to conform somewhat to the prices they offer. Unique characters are more valuable and plenty of people will be able to appreciate the design over the execution, not to mention that the execution gets better with every new one you make.

I know that... but I did really need to get points urgently so I had no other option.
And, regarding my self-made adoptables, I did spend weeks on them, but they don't look very good.. and I've submitted them in so many groups that everyone on DeviantArt must have seen them by now ><

Well it's as they say I suppose. First you get good, then you get fast, then you get good fast. Beginning artists always take a very long time on their designs and drawings which is only logical; there's a lot to learn and every piece is a big step forward. If you create enough of such pieces, you will get better and better at making them as you learn. Then, when you've got pretty good, you will start applying the things you've learned automatically which means you'll work much faster. That is when you can start making decent money with your art because the effort/income ratio is getting better and better.
But first you have to improve. Expand your visual library; collect pictures of animals that interest you (as well as animals that don't, actually), study them, try to understand how they work and why. Draw them and create your own variations. All fantasy is based on reality in some way or form, you can't make up new things out of nothing. You need to make sure you are always collecting new material and learning new things. Good luck!

Hey there, I appreciate your interest in my adoptables, but if I'm completely honest with you you will really have to step up your game if you want to sell anything. You need more uniqueness in your designs. Don't use programs to generate adoptable creatures; anyone can do that. The same goes for your stick figure adoptables; ten year olds can do that with MSPaint. Why would they pay you for it? To be successful with adoptables you have to offer people something unique, preferably even a single character or species per person, not several templates just with different colors. Good luck!

I'm not being mean, I'm being honest and trust me that the truth will get you much further than empty compliments. The creatures you named "I don't know what these are" in your journal, they have sticks for arms and legs, a simple smiley face for a head and very plain colorations. They are literally things I could have drawn when I was 8. Put more effort and thought into your designs, give them purpose and recognizeable features. I know you can do better, your gallery shows it. So do it. Better sell one really good design for 20 points than -possibly- sell 20 poor designs for 1 point each.

They were put up for auction . The listed prices were the highest bids, the initial prices were $10, $5 and %5.
And yes, actual money. I'd do point auctions but points don't fill my car's tank or pay for clothes or rent.

You don't really just ask people to be friends eh . You become friends over time. Also these adoptables have already been sold, and indeed you have to be 18 to purchase anything with PayPal unless your parent has an account.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1
CaraidArt In reply to Mystic909 [2011-07-06 10:19:23 +0000 UTC]
Adoptables are characters, creatures or a species that you can "adopt" by buying them, which then makes them yours . What you do with them once bought is completely up to you.
