Description Second WIP. It's progress is quite slow and as usual I'm not liking it much.

For some reason whenever I try to "finish" something, it loses the feel it had when I first sketched it. It would never look as good as it did in my head. It saddens me a bit, but at the same time it pushes me into practising harder. Perhaps some day in many years, I will be able to draw pictures actually close to what I have in mind.

Seconding what Dozaloz said--I'm still trying to find a way to paint that incorporates the energy of the original sketch, and I'm not sure I ever will.

Keep going with this! You have some great depth of field already with the mountains. I want to see it finished!!

I know what you mean and I doubt I'll ever be able to do that too, but if I can get close enough I'll be happy. At least I'll always have something to work for then ^^.

I'll definitely finish this, even if it'll take me weeks. Thanks for the encouragement .

Looking incredible so far!! The detail is superb!!
And I understand that feeling,
not a great deal comes out exactly how I envisage,
but I guess that's how we get better :3
BUT, this is stunning!!!
I cannot wait to see this finished!!

Would you have any tips on doing backgrounds?

Thank you :3. Tips on doing backgrounds? Plan ahead, make sure you have a good idea in mind of what it is you want to draw, then look up references of a similar environment. The references are really vitally important, as it's terribly hard to paint a realistic background if you don't know exactly what the environment looks like.

You can already tell that this background is partially a spawn from my own imagination because it doesn't look very real. I did use multiple references for it so far though.

I'm the same exact way about my pictures; when in the early stages they are just awesome, but as I add colors their awesomeness slowly decreases. lol I think it's a rare thing for any artist to have their work come out exactly as they see it in their heads. That background is looking great though! Much better than what I can do, read: I SUCK AT BACKGROUNDS. D:

Yeah I know, I don't think I will ever be able to get exactly on paper what I have in mind, but if I can get close enough, I'll be happy xD.

i get that feeling too. I think its because since sketches are less finished, it leaves a lot more to the imagination, which automatically fills in the empty space with awesomeness. When the work is more finished, leaves less for your brain to put in.

That's right. It's like when you look at a sketch, you can still see the flow and feeling the artist had when they drew it. A refined picture gets more stiff and takes away all the creativity that could've gone into it :/. That's why I try to make my finished pictures epic, but that's pretty damn hard to pull off xD.

yeah. that's why i urged you to play with your style back when. its good to try to maintain that flow/feeling throughout the whole process.

Trying, trying. I still work pretty loose and I'm pretty sure I even have a bit of a "style" shining through in the background there. It's difficult, but I'm determined.

Lhune, this is amazing. Seriously, it's absolutely stunning - the detail in the background is just awe-inspiring. Please please please don't give up on this when it has so much potential to be a materpiece. I think the reason some pieces lose the appeal they had when they're just sketches is because sketches tend to be loose, spontaneous and full of energy because they come straight from our subconscious and onto the page without us thinking too much about it. As we work into them, they lose some of the original spontaneity - so the thing to do is keep it fairly loose and don't think too much about what you're doing! With this, though, the detail is so stunning that it would be a shame to loosen it up too much, so if you're starting to get tired of it, take a break, work on something different and come back to it later :>

Seriously, I really cannot wait for this to be finished, it'll really be worth the effort <3

Lovely long comment is lovely <3.

I won't give up on it. JUST FOR YOU <3. Ahah, I'm pretty much determined to get it done even if it'll take me weeks to do it.

I love my sketches, that is, I always prefer them over my finished works. By far. Sketches leave so much more room for the viewer to fill in the picture themselves, to make up what's going on and what the environment will be like. Finished pictures are a lot more "stiff", they leave no room for imagination because everything is already there. That's why I try to make it feel as "real" as possible, so that even though the art is finished, people can still somewhat imagine being there and give life to the picture.

I hope so .

oh my goodnesss o3o i thought the background was a photo for a minute there xD hehe you sure do know how to detail a backfground

it has a lovely calming happy feel to it but yet i cant help but get a sense of loss or loneliness as if the shy dragon is hiding from somthing or looking at the pretty world below sad because of somthing XD.

and im sorta like you ^w^ i HAVE to finish things within 1-2 days otherwise i lose intrest, forget or ive started on another image.

I think its coming along very nicely, though I do understand what you mean. Half of my pictures will start out looking good, and after the halfway point I notice its not really what I had in mind so I don't like it much, but for myself to finish it anyway xD
One of these days! <3
Until then, this still looks very awesome x3 I still envy that background
