Description Showing Olesya Chase in her uniform and then calling up on the tech transformation that changes her into her battle form then arming herself and getting into the ready stance. Simple, smooth animation. Nothing fancy. Just a sorta teaser.

Coding-wise I've now got the game working with various joypads fully now, whether PC, Xbox360, PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 3. Each has it's own default quick layout, plus there be a custom layout mode if none of those suit your joypad.

Oh I love this! It's so tiny but the animation is really smooth and shows what's going on perfectly.

Thanks, yeah it looks tiny on desktop resolutions but the game itself uses a much lower res like old games so the sprite is perfectly visible. I need to edit this slightly cos I've realised I've added some very minor changes since.

Oh, I meant that I was impressed at how well the sprite and its animation read in spite of its size, not that its size was a bad thing. That's one of the things I've always admired about older games-- how they did so much with so little, in terms of graphics. Personally I find many modern games wanting in comparison.

Your work in general is absolutely gorgeous, by the way. Hero: CF is looking top-notch.

Yeah that's true. There aren't a lot of modern games that impress me graphically but there are a few. Street Fighter IV for actually making 3D even more full of character than the 2D games for once (and I like the ink effect that happens occasionally), LittleBigPlanet for it's great (and surreal) use of materials of all sorts, and if I got to have a game that looks 'realistic' then Uncharted 2 is absolutely gorgeous.
I hate doing 3D myself though. I just find it so boring to do and too much maths involved and the computer ends up producing the actual final images. With pixel art I choose the exact color, tone and placement of every pixel and I find that more satisfying.

I'm learning to draw again. I was starting to some Hero - CF artwork to make portraits and cutscenes from and it turns out I now suck at drawing stuff so I'm re-teaching myself again. It's going ok. Glad I grew out of that pseudo-manga style I got stuck in many years ago.

why am i typing so much?

Well, there's a lot to say about it, isn't there? Haha.

I do like LBP's use of 3D because it was so unexpected (and as you said, surreal). Uncharted 2 looks insane; I saw previews of it during the E3 broadcasts but I'm not much for the genre so I don't own it. The level of detail is something I hadn't even imagined was possible, though.

I don't have the first idea of how to do 3D graphics, so I'm naturally confined to 2D media for my own work. But maybe "confined" isn't a great word, since pixel art is something I've enjoyed looking at and making (however poorly) since I was a child.

Pseudo-manga or not, your older drawings looked good, so if you're progressing from that I'm sure it'll be even more impressive once you get back into the groove.

Ah, Uncharted is exactly my kind of game. Third person action adventure with a nice variety of gaming but everyone else these days seems to be all into the same old generic and highly limited first person shooters. Still, Uncharted looks set to do well and it should. It's obvious the developers loved working on it. The new co op mission modes are great fun too, as is the movie mode where you 'act' out action scenes with the characters and it seems to record your voice (and move the characters mouth when you talk like LittleBigPlanet does which freaked me out the first time I saw that happen).

Your drawing skills look really good so I'm hoping to get even a fraction as good as you. I've noticed as I been getting older I've started preferring more 'real' and gritty art like I did when I was a lil kid so hopefully I can do that sorta thing again. Anyone expecting typical anime type looks for the Hero - CF characters might be disappointed. There's still some anime influence in there (the helmet design of the main character is based on the anime Bubblegum Crisis) but it should reflect my current tastes some more. Even with the the proportions of the in-game sprites I've tried to avoid things looking too 'cute'. They're that size for gameplay and technical reasons more than any chibi aesthetic.

I definitely felt like a lot of love and labor went into that game from the small amount of footage I saw, which was from movie mode, IIRC. I'm not really into shooters, and a lot of 3D games in general disagree with me simply because motion sickness is a problem for me, sadly. For that reason I end up playing a lot of RPGs and SRPGs, since they're slower-paced and usually have less wild camera work.

That's kind of you to say. Even the older pixel portraits on your webpage are pretty far from the "moe" end of the spectrum, so I don't think you'll have too huge of a transition from that style to more realistic stuff.

Superb animation! Love the few frames where the weapon is generated. Really looking forward to this

So is this a game you're making, or is this sprite animation something you've made for another game? Looks fucking WIN.

It's for my game, various work-in-progress pics of which are in my gallery.

Gasp! Hero is a girl!
Awesome animation. So smooth and detailed for something so tiny!

Heh, I assumed everyone knew this character was a girl even just by the colors of the suit. She's not the only person in the game with a hero-tech suit though.

And yeah I do like getting smooth animation and detail into small sprites. I find it somewhat satisfying.

This is cool. For some reason I got the impression you were using more NES-like restrictions for this game...

Carnivius In reply to sergiocornaga [2009-07-06 10:01:22 +0000 UTC]

Originally it started off quite strictly NES style but I got tired of it. It's somewhere between NES and SNES now. Still uses NES screensize and music format, and feels 8 but just with more color and smoother animations. Since I have no plans to actually make it for NES I decided to just make it the best I can while keeping mostly 8 bit.
