Description
Hi, this is another attempt at painting a digital landscape and it just isnt working. I see so many other artists who seem to know some secret to color usage or something that I havent realized yet. When I paint stuff like this it doesnt seem to flow.. I understand that the guy isnt done, and that the rest of the painting isnt very detailed.. but I am just trying to get it to feel correct color-wise. If you know anything about color, please tell me what I'm doing wrong...When trying to paint the ground in this picture it was very frustrating.. and it still looks so cartoony to me.. I need to figure out the key to making a painting balanced.

Don't shade with blacks/whites. They'll wash out your colors, making them look drawn. That red tinged smoke looks wonderful. Looks very real. It's got much more texture than the rest of the drawing. I also feel like the mountains in the foreground are too close to be that soft. They are very soft looking, and I feel some texture to them would add realism. And finlly, just more details. Details bring out realism. Details, highlights, and maybe stronger shadows.
It's also quite a fantastical subject matter. Which will automatically be associated with not being real. The person is bigger than the mountain... The brain will naturally see that as fake.

Well the colours are really pastely, for one, which automatically makes it cartoony--I mean, if they were super vivid it would do the same thing--if you can find a balance between the two... also, maybe some texture on the ground? ~kinnas does really fantastic textured digital paintings, I dunno if looking at his stuff would be of any help...well. I dunno if any of this is any help. But I hope so.
Good luck.

Yeah, I don't know much about digital painting either... I wonder about that all the time... I don't know how they do it... I guess that's why I stay away from digital painting...
