Description The warm, liquid air clung
to our skin as we stood in
the shroud of yellow light
reaching past us, only to
dissipate and surrender
to the dark night.

The stars were out then,
looking down on us with little interest
as we fought for composure -
throats tightening, eyes tingling with tears --

They fell out of our tear ducts
plummeting past cheeks and chins,
down to the dewy grass
where they disappear into mud,
and soon, we were both
one, big, blubbering mess.

"Don't worry, I'll come back."

I opened my arms - a
bird testing its tiny wings
for the first time -
and when we embraced
you squeezed the air
out of my lungs --

"You better."

Oh, this is lovely. I love the fragility of the words and the sudden way the story unfolds, as well as the subtle imagery throughout; I can practically imagining standing there in the exact same situation.
