7 AM was an ungodly hour to be awake, and truth be told, he had been up even earlier than that. Between waking up to tend to Kamelot early, spending time quality time at night with his girlfriend, and the ever perpetual sleep issues, he hadn't gotten much sleep las night... or the last days. But coffee was a miracle worker, or so he hoped as he leaned against the table.
Lost in his thoughts, Lei approached him with a smile.
"Morning" he said in a low tone "How are you doing?"
"Good morning, handsome," she replied, her smile radiant as she settled beside him. "All good. You? Ready to go?"
"Yeah," he answered, reluctantly setting down his empty cup. "Yeah, we should get going."
"How's your shoulder holding up?"
"It's okay, a bit sore," Jim shrugged, his reply hinting at more than he let on. "And you?"
"I'm good," she sighed, sensing that he was deflecting her answer... just as someone had warned her this would start happening sooner or later.
"Alright then, let's go," he said, grinning as he planted a gentle kiss on her forehead and promptly grabbing his things to leave the place.

The destination wasn't too far away, just a short car ride, and soon they arrived. Kamelot greeted them with a nicker, casting a curious but somewhat disdainful glance at Lorelei. Lorelei, however, was more than used to the mare antics and focused on getting her ready. She was captivated by the nonsense Jim spoke to the mare; It was an usual ocurrence of most mornings, 'discussing' with the mare what was needed to do throught the day, what was expected of the ride, which jumps seemed difficult, or just plain adoration for her. It was sweet, to see him perfom a certain kind of daily ritual with the black mare.

Mare, that in return seemed to never stop hating on her. But as long as there were no kicks or bites, Lorelei could tolerate it. Over the few short years she had known Kamelot, there had been some close calls, but she couldn't help but appreciate the mare's spirited personality and enjoy her antics, despite her ever attempt to end her life with death-glares towards her direction.
In a matter of minutes, they had prepared Kam and walked out of the barn towards the warm-up area. Time wasn't pressing yet, so they took an enjoyable pace, engaging in lighthearted conversation. The sky was painted with a warm yellow sunrise, welcoming them to the venue.
"How are you feeling today?" Lorelei finally asked as they arrived, observing as other riders started to gather. "And more importantly, how is Flop feeling?"
"We're doing alright. The only obstacle that worries me is the whale jump," Jim replied, adjusting his helmet. "But I'm glad to have you by my side, I must say."
Lei chuckled in response, but her own lack fo sleep prevented her from conjuring a witty reply.
"Well, good luck then," she said, helping him mount the mare before walking away. She wanted to watch the course and for that, she needed to find a good viewing spot.
Finally, it was a calm day with no surprises or incidents. The mare or the rider or maybe both of them did get a little spooked by the whale tail obstacle, but they managed to navigate the course flawlessly. Both of them were drenched in sweat, and Jim let out a colorful array of swearing about the heat and hating the heat, but there was an undeniable smile on his face at the end of the course.
For Lorelei, it was a peaceful way to conclude the competition and enjoy the remaining days in each other's company.
