This is good stuff. You paint with light well. To my eyes, it might provide a tighter composition and focus if you were to crop everything to the right of the pillar that's on the right side of the picture. But I do enjoy this shot.

Are those..?
Ah, nevermind, it's the lamp, it's the lamp, something I would want to illuminate myself with, while playing piano in my basement, surrounded by the wooden walls, and ivory keys.

I've never known anyone that was so in love with and could romanticize light like you do.

I miss my piano.

Gruye In reply to cdn1 [2008-04-29 00:59:52 +0000 UTC]

I wish I could tune my piano by myself,
I would love nothing more.
I gave it some thought the other day too,
I'm not happy with casual light or colors.
I change all my photos around so that they represent something other than life I guess.
I won't keep the tone the same, which leads me to think that this mentioned "style" of mine is otherworldly.
I dunno.

cdn1 In reply to Gruye [2008-04-29 01:26:27 +0000 UTC]

I thought about tuning mine once but fortunately i gave up on the idea. There's too many things that could get messed up and so expensive to fix. You'd have loved the old Dutch guy that used to tune mine. He was so fucking out there; swearing... talking to himself, singing and he chain-smoked like an old whore. He was a damned good tuner though and he taught me how to properly play Shostakovitch.

The light, I think is the reason I like nightshots. I like the way the shadows have texture at night; almost like they have substance.

Otherworldly...yes!

Gruye In reply to cdn1 [2008-04-29 03:23:49 +0000 UTC]

That sounds like one hell of a tuner, I'd like to catch a drink with the guy!
My first tuner was blind, which was neat, because he didn't use all those instruments,
but my second is a guy who insists on bringing his dog in, and using all of this high tech shit on my baby upright grandstand. It seems wrong anyway.

My guy used tuning forks. The very mention of electronic tuning set him off like a raving lunatic. Like I said he was awesome.

Thanks Lynne! There are a lot more architectural details on the building that I will be posting eventually.

Brilliant, this. I rarely see a shot that I like so thoroughly, with such perfect film noir-esque quality and atmosphere.

II'm ok I've started to get a bit more organized. I've done something like you. I wiped out everything and reduced the amount of people I watch. I find it so hard not to fav stuff though.

really its in it

If where is this?

This is in Toronto. It's the Confederation Life Insurance Company. The building is from the 1880's. It's made of red sandstone which is perfect for carving.

Many of the stone carvers and masons that worked on formal buildings in Canada were from Italy and Spain. Very often the architect would let them incorporate something personal in their work; perhaps something to remind them of home; like the grapes for instance.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Arline In reply to cdn1 [2008-04-25 05:55:47 +0000 UTC]

I understand. Italian and Spanish architectural designs are always amazing and really have got great construction achievement all the world.

My best wishes...

Very Noice, mike.. You're back in your element. It looks like a place you'd find you reading a newspaper, chomping a guitar; somewhere like battery park or summat like that.. This kinda stuff makes me miss real cities.

Thanks my man! Root around Albuquerque and find some more of the great southwestern art deco/post modern architecture. Go inside the buildings and take shots of stairways and elevator banks and lobbies. Fountains and monuments are good too. Or shoot a certain kind of scrap; toilets, bicycles, engine blocks...whatever maybe do a series. Find some diners! Think like a tourist.

OK I'm finished my rant...time for a juicy ska break! [link]

historically the world over there is awesome design and architecture...
but I believe the 'modern developed' world is suffering from too much function... I love the concepts of the craft movement and artist like William Morris... 'the objects you see and use daily should be beautiful in function and design so that your life is enriched daily thru contact'

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

cdn1 In reply to hawthorne-cat [2008-04-24 04:12:00 +0000 UTC]

The work of Frank Lloyd-Wright fit in very well with the arts and crafts concepts. His earlier houses had great built in arts and crafts touches. He also created some beautiful stained glass designs.
